Roy Boyd Obituary

Roy J. Boyd Sr.

Roy J. Boyd Sr., 84, of Brunswick, passed away peacefully at his Glynn County farm on Sunday, Aug. 1, 2021.

Roy J. Boyd was born on Jan. 26, 1937, in Grady, Alabama, and graduated from Montgomery County High School, where he played football and attended Auburn University on scholarship (football and academic). He was inducted into the Squire?s Club and was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity while at Auburn. As the son of a cattle rancher, he loved horses and was an active participant in rodeos during his high school and college years. He met Charlotte Jones (Boyd) while at Auburn, and they were married in November 1958. After their wedding, he finished his senior year at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama, with a business degree.

Mr. and Mrs. Boyd moved to South Georgia in 1959, and he began his lifelong career in the insurance industry.

He loved Glynn County and proudly served as a two-term Glynn County Commissioner in the 1970s, including a term as chairman. He was a member of the Jaycees. Throughout his career, he served with many charitable organizations in Glynn County and proudly told people he was from Glynn County in all of his travels. Later in his career, he and his wife moved to his farm where he was very active and received recognitions for his assistance in the development of the Altamaha Regional Park, located on the Altamaha River.

He is a past president of the State Life Underwriters Association of Georgia.

In early 1970, after realizing that so many civilian employees working through government contracts at military installations had insufficient or no health insurance and were unable to afford health insurance through their wages, he designed a national plan to insure civilian employees at military installations throughout the United States and offshore oil workers in Alaska and Guam. He formed this plan with the Industrial Technical Professional Employees Union AFL-CIO, which was formed in 1971. The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, in Brunswick, Georgia, is one of the government installations where his health insurance plan was administered, and residents of Glynn County have enjoyed scholarship awards to College of Coastal Georgia and the former Brunswick Junior College from this plan. After several years of insuring civilian employees through several large insurance companies, the plan became self-insured, and he became the administrator of the plan for the remainder of his career. He retired in 2019.

Roy Boyd is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Charlotte Jones Boyd; his son, Roy J. Boyd Jr., a local attorney, and his wife, Jimmie; three loving grandchildren, Caroline Boyd Furlong (Ross), Charlotte Anne Boyd and Roy J. Boyd III; and one great-grandson, Banks Furlong.

The family will have a private service at Mr. Boyd's request and his ashes will be spread with his deceased daughter?s ashes (Karen Marie Boyd) at his farm.

Chapman Funeral Chapel & Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.
