David Varela, Sr.

David Varela, Sr., 60, lifelong resident of Monterey County, passed away Sunday, July 22, 2012. He was born September 26, 1951, in Chualar.

David was a God fearing man, who loved his wife and children dearly. He was a very proud and hard-working man. David loved to exercise, especially walking. His hobbies were collecting antiques and coins. David was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew him. David is now at peace, resting with the Lord.

He is survived by his wife, Christal Varela of Salinas; daughter, Cecilia (Monico) Ruggiero of Salinas; God-daughter, Valerie Varela Martinez; sons, David, Jr. (Elvia) Varela of Salinas and Stephen A. (Kayla) Varela of Colorado; God-son, Tony Gallegos, Jr.; grandchildren, Antonio P. Varela, Priscilla (Abel) Gomez, Carissa Varela, Elycia Ruggiero, Eliasz L. Varela, Sarina Varela, Brianna Ruggiero and David Varela III; great-granddaughter, Nevaeh Marie; brothers, Valerio (Rachael) Varela of Moss Landing, Joey Varela of Salinas, Teddy (Martha) Varela of Roseville and Patrick (Patricia) Varela of Salinas; sisters, Helen (David) Murillo of Rocklin, Maria de la Paz Varela of Sutter Creek, Eva (Jaime) Perez of Salinas, Lupe Varela of Salinas, Judy (Steve) Riggs of Susanville, Laura (Johnny) Sandoval of Salinas and Lucy (Pete) Barrellli of Sacramento; sister-in-law, Mary Herrera; numerous nieces, nephews and other loving relatives also survive.

Public Wake will be held Wednesday, July 25, 2012 from 7 to 9 p.m., at Healey Mortuary, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas, CA 93905.

Funeral services will take place Thursday, July 26, 2012 at 10 a.m., at Life Christian Church, 1327 E. Alisal St., Salinas, CA 93905.

Burial to follow services at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 18200 Damian Way, Salinas, CA 93907.

Hey papa I wish I was really talking to you an got to hear you talk back but unfortunately it can't be . This thanksgiving was harder then I thought it was going to be without you . We went to visit you and as much as I tried to hold my tears back I just couldn't the pain of missing you came overwhelming I wanted to just cry an cry ! Christal, Cecilia, Beau, & Steven,

How blessed I am to have spent time with my cousin before he passed. He showed me his faith in God and the love he had for all of you. He said he believed in miracles, whether it be on this side or the other. He accepted whatever God's plan was for him and his only concern was his family. He has inspired me to seek a closer relationship with God. His peace & strength amazed me.
His death has made me think of my love for my own family and not to take life for grant it.
To be at the hospital and see the love and tenderness that you all, Christal, Cecilia, Beau, & Steven had for him was heartwarming. You surrounded him with your love. David now walks with all those who went before him. Sending my love with David to: My Dad Paul, Tia Esperanza, Tia Lucy, Tio Albert, my cousins, especially your bro Larry.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.

There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.

because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.

But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,

Crystal and Varela Family I am so sorry for your loss. Rest assure that he is in a better place. I always remember David when he would walk by my house smelling my Mom's homemade tortillas he would yell loudly, "Betty, I can smell the tortillas from outside your house" She would welcome him in and he would sit down to 1/2 doz tortillas with butter.
