Myra McCartney-Golphenee Obituary
MONTEREY
Myra Lynn McCartney-Golphenee, 65, of Monterey, passed away Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, surrounded by family and close friends after a heroic battle against cancer.
She was born Jan. 14, 1944, in Cincinnati, Ohio. At the age of six, she moved to Southern California and would forever call California home.
She met her beloved husband in the fifth grade and would later marry him after they both graduated from California State University at Los Angeles.
She spent 24 years as a devoted Army wife, traveling all across the United States and Europe. Finally settling on the Monterey Peninsula in 1987 where she continued her 22 year long career in the U.S. Civil Service; initially working at the Directorate of Contracting (DOC), and finally retiring on Jan. 31, 2009 from the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC). Myra was actively involved in Toastmasters International, serving as president of the local chapter. She was a certified project manager, and served as the first president of the Monterey area Project Management Institute.
Myra's greatest joys were her husband and only son; family was always her highest priority and she ensured quality time prevailed. Her passions included a thirst for knowledge and understanding, a love for Great Danes and her art work: everything to include painting, sculpture, a line of wearable art clothing, and making jewelry. She always made a continuous effort to ensure the beautification of all the many places she lived making and calling them home with her unique murals, decorating acumen, and her special landscaping prowess.
Myra was preceded in death by her parents, Ottley and Edra McCartney.
Survivors: She leaves behind the boys that loved her so deeply: her husband of 42 years, O. Jack Golphenee; her son, Derek Golphenee; and her brother, Todd McCartney.
Celebration of Life: 3 p.m. Saturday, April 18, at the Pacific Coast Church, 522 Central Ave., Pacific Grove. All of those who knew Myra and cherished her spirit for life are welcome to join her family and friends.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, please send donations in her name to the Elkhorn Slough Foundation where she loved to hike, canoe, and be with nature, for a bench in honor of her memory.
