Janet Maria Baur Steele, 69, of Woodlawn, went home to be with her Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, July 28, 2016 at the Twin County Regional Hospital. Mrs. Steele was born in New York to the late Carl Frank and Janet Laurita Baur.
Janet was a loving mother and grandmother; she was a devoted sister. Janet enjoyed cooking and baking for her family especially at the holidays. She loved music, in particular classical music. She was an accomplished pianist and an avid reader. Janet was a dedicated teacher and to many of her students, she was a favorite. Janet had a strong faith in God, trusting him and his gift of salvation through his son Jesus Christ. She drew comfort in knowing that she would be with Jesus at the end of this earthly life and from God's word.
Mrs. Steele is survived by her children, Jennifer Jones and husband, Tony of Mt. Airy, NC., Christine Reavis and husband, Mike of Woodlawn, Matthew Steele and wife, Gayle of SC and Joshua Steele of NC. She is also survived by eight Grandchildren and a sister, Christine Koepp of New York.

Words cannot begin to describe the sadness I feel over the passing of my second cousin Janet Steele. Her Mother was my first cousin and along with her husband Charlie Baur, they were also my God parents. Janet and her sister Christine were a bit younger than I but we all enjoyed a very close relationship growing up in the 1950s. They lived in Flushing NY within shouting distance of their Grandparents home as well as the home of their cousins. We lived in an apartment in NYC. Rarely did two months go by without our families getting together.
The fondest memories of my youth are of those spent at Christmas, Thanksgiving and all of the other wonderful gatherings that our families shared together. My cousin was truly a woman of God, who loved her family and in turn was much loved by many. She embodied all that her Mother was and I'm sure is now receiving a wonderful reception in a place far better than the one she has left. God bless and keep her family and give them the grace and strength to get through this very trying time.

Hearing this news is one of the moments I'll always remember where I was and what I was doing. I was deeply saddened and shocked. Mrs. Steele was my 7th grade English teacher. I'm starting my very first year of teaching in a few days. I'll be teaching 8th grade English. My goal is to hopefully be a fraction as good and loved as she was. She'll forever be in my heart.

I am so sorry for your loss. I counted her as a dear friend and colleague. I know she was a wonderful teacher and loved children. She valued friendship and family. Last month, my daughter helped her clean her house. She adored Lydia and told me that she was glad I sent her because they were so much alike, that my daughter knew exactly how she wanted things done. We will miss her so very much. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Mrs. Steele she was one of my favorite teachers in middle school, and Josh was one of my favorite people, this makes me really sad. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord, shes definitely in a better place, but I know she'll be missed.
