Bernice Smith Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our mother and friend, Bernice "Bernie" Smith, who passed away from an extended illness on April 20, 2025, at the age of 93.

Bernie was born in DuBois, PA, the daughter of John and Lillie Christian. She was married to George Peterman, and later, to Alvin Smith, who both preceded her in death. Children George Peterman III, Charles Peterman, and Georgia Viers also preceded her in death.

She is survived by Louise Peterman of Indiana, PA, Michael and Patricia Peterman of Simpsonville, SC, Eva and Michael McDonald of Leland, NC and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bernie was a devoted educator whose passion for teaching shaped countless young lives. She believed in the power of learning, not just within the classroom, but throughout life. Her former students often remembered her for her patience and her encouragement. She taught primary grades in several schools in the Altoona School District, worked with the primary gifted program for 10 years and once served as the closed-circuit TV primary teacher.

Outside of teaching, Bernie found joy in exploring the world. Whether it was sailing across oceans on cruises or snow birding in a fifth wheel camper, she sought out adventure whenever she could.

At home, she poured her heart into creating beauty with her hands. Quilting, crafting, sewing, and baking elaborately beautiful wedding cakes. She believed that if she had the materials and the instructions, she could make anything. Each creation was a reflection of her thoughtfulness, often made as gifts for the people she loved.

Bernie was very involved in activities at SpiriTrust Lutheran Village in Shrewsbury, PA. She had been a league bowler for many years and more recently, had been an avid Wii bowler with her many friends. She was a top tier bridge player, often giving instruction to others and even forming her own bridge club. She also regularly played pinochle, canasta, and bingo. She was an active resident member of the SpiriTrust Sunshine Committee.

There will be a memorial service in her honor at 11 a.m. on April 25, 2025, at the SpiriTrust Lutheran Village, Zimmerman Place Café in Shrewsbury=.

A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held at 11 a.m. on April, 29, 2025, at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home, Inc., 719 N. 4th Avenue, Altoona, PA 16601, with a visitation to be held on April 28, 2025, from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation in her memory to the SpiriTrust Lutheran Benevolence Fund. You may drop off donations marked "In memory of Bernie Smith" at the front desk at Zimmerman Place or donate online at www.spiritrustlutheran.org/philanthropy/.
