Fredrick Wayman "Freddy" Bassett, 75, of New Castle passed away Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2025, at Henry Community Health. He was born in New Castle, to Alfred "Satch" M. and Twila L. (Modlin) Bassett on Sept. 25, 1949. He attended Walter P. Chrysler Memorial High School. Fredrick attended church at Bethel AME and Bethany Tabernacle, both in New Castle.
Fredrick was a lifelong asphalt paver and sealer. He worked for the Indiana Paving Company for the Sanders Young and Heard Paving with Charles Heard. He also worked for Driveway Guys with Fred Hopkins and AB Seal Coating and Paving for Andy Brown. He worked for himself as owner of FB Seal Coating most recently. Fredrick also briefly worked at Allegheny Ludlum and Highway Construction.
Left to cherish his memory are two daughters, Katrina L. Bassett of New Castle, IN and India J. Bassett of Indianapolis, IN; two sons, Fredrick W. Bassett Jr. of Indianapolis, IN and William T. Bassett of New Castle, IN; former wife, Lou Helen Bassett Smith of Indianapolis, IN; grandchildren, Shurnella Bassett, Shameika Bassett, Sedrick Bassett, Latrina Ray, Tamya Ray, and Dasja Bassett; great-grandchildren, Marquis Bassett, Aaliyah Bassett, Lareico Bassett, Persephanie Bassett, Zamorah Bassett, Latrius Bassett, Amani Cooke and Quadir Cooke; four sisters, Retta Wearren, Charlestine Wells, Mitzie Bassett, and Jennifer Cottman; one brother, Jeffery Bassett (Cherie); several nieces and nephews, and special friends, Penny Stockton and Johnny Braswell.
Fredrick was preceded in passing by his parents; sister, Benita Meredith; grandsons, Duke Ball Jr.; son-in-law, Duke Ball Sr., and great-grandchildren; Amani and Quadir Cooke.
Fredrick enjoyed being with his family and friends and listening to music, laughing, joking, cooking out, fishing and dancing.
Services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29 at Bethany Tabernacle in New Castle with Pastor Juanita Suggs officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday at the church.
Memorial Contributions may be given to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 9045 River Road Suite 175, Indianapolis, IN 46240.
