Jerry Rowland, 82, of Mt. Summit passed away from his battle with Alzheimer's on Wednesday, April 12, 2023 at Morrison Woods Health Campus in Muncie. He was born on February 5, 1941 in Salem, OR a son of the late John and Bertha Marie (Trembath) Rowland.
Jerry was a 1958 graduate of Lincoln High School in Portland, OR and then promptly joined the US Army where he retired following 27 years of service. Jerry's first assignment was in Korea but over the years spent time in California, Texas, Virginia, France, 14 years in Germany, Vietnam and finally his last assignment was at the Pentagon. Following his active-duty service, Jerry was employed for three years by the Civil Service at the Marine Corp Air Ground Combat Center and was made an "Honorary Marine". Upon retirement, Jerry and his wife, Sharon, resided in Steilacoom, WA for 13 years; Sharon passed away in 2011. In 2015, Jerry moved to New Castle and married Nancy (Kissick) Kinzel; they have been married for the past 7 years. Jerry was a "Trekker" who loved Star Trek attending the convention on an annual basis. Over the years, Jerry had collected lots of memorabilia and autographs. Jerry attended the Springport Christian Church. Jerry and Nancy enjoyed traveling the United States and around the world but they especially enjoyed a good cruise.
Jerry is survived by his wife of seven years, Nancy Kinzel of Mt. Summit; children, Phil (Pat) Rowland of University Place, WA, John (Rachel) Rowland of Salem, OR, Erik (Faith) Myrvold of Midland, VA and Dorothy (Jason) Moore of Lebanon, OR; step-son, Michael (Erin) Kinzel of Elkhart, step daughter-in-law, Danette Kinzel of Dalton, GA; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon Rowland.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 22, 2023 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. An interment service will follow at Mt. Summit Cemetery with military honors conducted by the American Legion and US Army. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday. In Lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations in Jerry's honor be made to the Springport Christian Church or the Alzheimer's Association, www.alz.org.
