Julian Brown Obituary

Julian Martin Brown

Millville - Julian Martin Brown, 90, passed away Tuesday night, December 11, at home in Millville. Julian was born and raised in Millville, and had many fond memories of his years at Millville High School, where he was active in student council, drama club, and football. He was especially proud of being the center on the varsity football team that beat Vineland in the 1944 Thanksgiving game!

Immediately after graduating from high school, Julian joined the U.S. Army at the end of WWII, and remained a proud veteran throughout his life. After completing his service, he attended Drew University in Madison, NJ, where he was once again active in the drama department, acting in many Shakespearean plays. During this same time, he was also a student minister for the Port Elizabeth and Cumberland Methodist churches, where he especially enjoyed leading the youth groups.

Soon after leaving Drew University, Julian worked for the Camden County Boy Scouts of America. However, he spent most of his career living in the Midwest and working in sales and marketing. He was vice president of sales for such companies as Lenox Candle Company and Springfield Instrument Company. He retired in 1995.

After retiring, Julian moved back to his hometown of Millville and remained busy for several years doing volunteer work. He served on the Board of Directors for the South Jersey Council on Issues of Aging, Affordable Homes, and AARP. He was a community education speaker for Hospice Care of S. Jersey and belonged to the Senior Advisory Committee for Cumberland County College. He was also a host for the Saturday morning "Sounds of the Big Bands" radio show for radio station WMVB 1440 AM.

Julian loved football, music, theater, movies, storytelling and jokes, and going on vacation to places like Ireland, England, France, California, DisneyWorld, and his beloved Ocean City, NJ. But above all, he loved people, especially his family: his wife of 66 years, the love of his life, Nancy Jane McCafferty Brown; his 4 children, Roy Brown (Teresa), Julie Ann Guyette (Rich), Natalie Ada Cassidy (Warren), and William Asher Brown (Tamar); his 3 grandchildren, Nicole Christa Brown Docta (Alex), Ryan Alexander Brown, and Kyle Andrew Brown; his sisters-in-law Gloria Dunham Brown and Barbara McCafferty Andrews (Larry); and several nieces and nephews. Julian was predeceased by many friends and family members whom he truly loved, including his parents, Roy and Elsie (Fox) Brown, his brothers Roy Brown Sr. and LeRue Brown, and his sister Rosemonde Rubert.

Per Julian's wishes, there will be no formal services. The family would like to express sincere gratitude to the staff of Holy Redeemer Hospice for their care and compassion during the past 6 weeks. For those who wish, a memorial contribution may be made to: Holy Redeemer Hospice / 160 E. Ninth Avenue, Suite B / Runnemede, NJ 08078
