Samuel T. Cornish, 70, of Millville died Monday, May 16, 2011, at the Bishop McCarthy Residence in Vineland following a lengthy illness.
Born in Port Norris on Dec. 8, 1940, he was the son of the late John E. Cornish and Lida May Douglas Cornish and the husband of Mary Jackson Cornish. He had lived in Millville for 18 years and was a resident of Woodbine prior to that. A career truck driver, he had been employed with Pipco Transportation in Rosenhayn, National Freight, Indian River Transportation and the Port Norris Express Company. Mr. Cornish was a veteran and served his country in the United States Marine Corps. He was a member of Bethel AME Church in Millville, where he belonged to the choir and was an avid bowler.
In addition to his wife Mary, he is survived by two sons, Samuel T. Cornish Jr. and his fiancée, Charlotte Santanio and Gerald J. Cornish also all of Millville; six sisters, Mary Carmichael, Cora Ann Cornish and Renee Cornish all of Port Norris, Rose Showell of Vineland, Maxine Sample of Petersburg, Va. and Gertrude Cornish of Bowie, Md.; four brothers, Joe Cornish of California, George Cornish of Vineland, Thelbert Cornish of Decatur, Ga., Richard Jamison of Millville; and two grandchildren, Kristopher Santanio and Kaytt Hodges. He was predeceased by two brothers, John and Howard Cornish.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at the Bethel AME Church, 113 S. 5th St., Millville. Burial will take place at the Cumberland County Veterans Cemetery in Hopewell Township. Friends will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday at the church.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Padgett Funeral Home, Upper Deerfield Township.
