Catherine Tinervia Obituary

Catherine Mary Tinervia, 94, of Coldwater, passed away Monday, February 26, 2018 at Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility.
Visitation will be held Thursday, March 1, 2018 from 4-8:00 PM, with the rosary to begin at 7:30PM, at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, March 2, 2018 at 1:30 PM at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Coldwater with Rev. Fr. Paul Redmond officiating. Visitation will be held again, prior to the service on Friday, beginning at 12:45 PM at St. Charles. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.
Catherine was born April 1, 1923 in Coldwater, MI to Joseph and Grace (Barone) Gaglio. She grew up in Coldwater attending Maple Grove Elementary and St. Charles Catholic High School, graduating in 1941 as valedictorian. Following high school, she worked at Regal Manufacturing Co., Coldwater State Home, G.C. Murphy Co., and JC Penney.
On June 1, 1946, she married Joseph John Tinervia in Coldwater, where together they spent the entire 50 years of their marriage. He preceded her in death on January 16, 1997.
Catherine was a dedicated wife, mother and homemaker. She worked hard, cooking, cleaning and lovingly caring for her family. If you walked into her kitchen, it was very common to smell a big pot of spaghetti sauce (sugo) and meatballs simmering on the stove. The aroma in the air was genuinely Italian, homemade pasta noodles, ravioli, bread, pies, cakes and cookies were her delight. "Mangia" (eat) was the word at her kitchen table. She was known to lead all in saying grace. That was a must before every meal at home and away with others.
Mrs. Tinervia was a lifelong member of St. Charles Borromeo Church where she was active in the Altar/Rosary Society and Ave Maria Guild, the Coldwater Fire Department Women's Auxiliary and volunteered as a Foster Grandparent. During her residency at Maple Lawn, one could find her smiling and laughing while playing cards with her friends. Her husband, family, friends and faith meant everything to her. She faithfully attended Mass every Sunday and any special devotions throughout the year. She truly believed and had faith in the power of prayer. Her rosary was never too far from her side and it seemed she was always praying for someone.
Catherine will be dearly missed by her children Sam Tinervia, Joe (Carol) TInervia all of Coldwater, Mary (Bill) Klotz of Grand Rapids, her sisters Josephine Post and Rosalie Bercaw both of Coldwater, her grandchildren Jim Tinervia of Eaton Rapids, Marji (William) Renner of Hastings, Sara (Greg) Soleau of Grand Rapids, John (Melissa) Tinervia of Jackson, Kristen (Robert) Roper of Grand Rapids, William "BJ" (Kelly) Klotz all of Grand Rapids, 11 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her brothers Sam and Joe Gaglio and sisters Mary D'Angelo and Pauline Lopez.

My father and uncles regaled us with stories from the Coldwater days and they often included a Tinervia or "the Gaglio girls" (always with a fond memory of their cooking!!). Catherine's husband, Joe, was one of my dad's closest friends. The last of the Harmon boys passed away in July. But now old friends and family are having a joyous reunion at the feast our Lord promised. Until we join them my family and I extend our sympathy and special prayers. Our earthly existence is poorer -- I've come to believe that they really are The Greatest Generation. RIP from Deborah Harmon Buschman, daughter of Harold ("Doc") Harmon

Sometimes it is hard not to wish for one more day, one more word, one more chance to hug, pray with her and say goodbye, but Sam, Corky and Mary should rest assured that you were a JOY to your mother, every day of her life. She was immensely proud of you. It was a privilege to have known her and I can see that her goodness lives on through you and your families.
My fondest memory was her GREAT COOKING. She was extraordinarily kind to my mother through illness.
With God's Love and Mine, Judy Calvaruso Gruner
