James Tipton, 68, a beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away Sunday, September 21, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, service, and quiet generosity. A longtime resident of Maryville, Tennessee, James later made his home in Sevierville, where he continued to live out his deep love for nature and the mountains he cherished.
James served his country with honor in the United States Navy before continuing a life of service as both a firefighter and police officer for the Knoxville Airport Authority. His strong work ethic and skilled hands later led him to become a self-employed finish carpenter and general contractor, where his craftsmanship and attention to detail spoke volumes about his character.
He was a devoted family man, known for his deep faith in God, love of fishing, and appreciation for the simple, meaningful things in life. James was a man of courage, honesty, and integrity-a quiet helper who often gave to others without seeking recognition. He stood by his word, led by example, and left those around him better for having known him.
James Tipton will be deeply missed, but his values, love, and the many lives he touched will carry his memory forward.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hewlette Ray Sr. and Mary Sue Tipton; and brother, Hewlette Ray Tipton Jr.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sheryl Tipton; son, Johnathon Cody Tipton (Kimberly); stepson, John T. Mauro; stepdaughter, Addy Tuthill (Kyle); grandchildren, Brooks Tuthill, Marcus Cunningham, Chance Cunningham, and Connor Rudder; sister, Kimberly Marlene Garner (Michael); sister-in-law, Lisa McDaniel Tipton; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to be made in Jim's honor to St. Jude’s Research Hospital. Donations may be sent to: 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN 38105
The family will be holding a celebration of life service with a visitation starting at 11:30AM and service starting at 12PM Monday, September 29, 2025, in the chapel of East Maryville Baptist Church. 1150 Brown School Rd, Maryville, TN 37804. Cremation arrangements made by Atchley Funeral Home. Online condolences may be made at www.atchleyfuneralhome.com.
