Alice known as "Murph" to all who loved her will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She lived in the Groton/Mystic area her whole life. She was born March 13, 1933 and lived and grew up in a house in what is now known as Bluff Point State Park at Poquonnock Bridge.
Alice Married Joel H. Murphy on Sept. 16, 1958, in Norwich. He survives her as well as their children, Kevin Murphy and his wife, Nancy, of Voluntown and their children Keith, Peter and Mayson; their son, Mark Murphy, and his wife, Patricia, of Norwich and their children Valerie, Patrick and Sarah and great-granddaughter, Shaylen; their daughter, Susan Campanelli and her husband, Roger, of Port Orchard, Wash., and their children, Allyson and Kelsi. Murph is also survived by her sisters, Lucille MacKenzie, of Virginia Beach, Va., and Kathryn Winkler, of New York; and her brothers, Max Winkler, of New Hampshire, Ernest Winkler, of New London, Larry Winkler, of Texas, and Charlie Winkler, of Groton.
She worked at Supervisor of Ships at the Groton Sub Base, and at Groton Utilities and in recent years as a teacher's aid at Claude Chester School. Alice enjoyed crocheting fine doilies, making jigsaw puzzles, bird watching and going for walks with her husband and her grandchildren. Alice was also a long time member of the Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department Women's Auxiliary. Murph's sense of humor, sharp wit, and freely offered opinions will be missed.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St., Groton. A calling hour will be held from 10 a.m. until the start of the funeral service. Burial will be private. Following the funeral service, the family will receive friends and relatives at their home.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the National Kidney Foundation of Connecticut, 2139 Silas Deane Highway, Rocky Hill, CT 06067.

Not being able to make it home, I phoned the house and spoke w/ Susan. I shared all the memories I had about Ms. Murphy. From yearly pot luck get togethers to going to Susan's band competions w/ Ms. Murphy. I am very glad that we were part of each others lives. My memories of her will be with me forever. Being far away doesn't mean you forget. She told me she was happy to hear from me and to know I was doing good in my life. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you right now. Mr. Murphy (Joe), Thank you for not forgeting me and you are not forgotten either. All the kids that came and went on our street will never forget Ms. Murphy. We love you Ms. Murphy and Mr. Murphy.

My grandmother was a very important person in my life. I was very close to her, and I miss her dearly. Whenever I needed her, she was there no matter what. She'd take me for walks, fatten me up, and we always played cards and she'd try to let me win almost every time. I love her very much.
You will remain in my heart always and forever, Grams. I'll see ya up there.

Alice was a great friend & neighbor. She always had great ideas for me on gardening. We had good times at family picnics, graduations, wedding & birthdays. She was a 3rd. grandmother to my daughter, Adrienne. I will miss her. I love you Alice.
