Groton - Alice Irene Murphy, 72, of 16 Elizabeth Court, Groton, passed peacefully at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital on March 8, 2006 after a sudden illness, surrounded by her family.
Alice known as "Murph" to all who loved her will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She lived in the Groton/Mystic area her whole life. She was born March 13, 1933 and lived and grew up in a house in what is now known as Bluff Point State Park at Poquonnock Bridge.
Alice Married Joel H. Murphy on Sept. 16, 1958, in Norwich. He survives her as well as their children, Kevin Murphy and his wife, Nancy, of Voluntown and their children Keith, Peter and Mayson; their son, Mark Murphy, and his wife, Patricia, of Norwich and their children Valerie, Patrick and Sarah and great-granddaughter, Shaylen; their daughter, Susan Campanelli and her husband, Roger, of Port Orchard, Wash., and their children, Allyson and Kelsi. Murph is also survived by her sisters, Lucille MacKenzie, of Virginia Beach, Va., and Kathryn Winkler, of New York; and her brothers, Max Winkler, of New Hampshire, Ernest Winkler, of New London, Larry Winkler, of Texas, and Charlie Winkler, of Groton.
She worked at Supervisor of Ships at the Groton Sub Base, and at Groton Utilities and in recent years as a teacher's aid at Claude Chester School. Alice enjoyed crocheting fine doilies, making jigsaw puzzles, bird watching and going for walks with her husband and her grandchildren. Alice was also a long time member of the Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department Women's Auxiliary. Murph's sense of humor, sharp wit, and freely offered opinions will be missed.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St., Groton. A calling hour will be held from 10 a.m. until the start of the funeral service. Burial will be private. Following the funeral service, the family will receive friends and relatives at their home.
