Angelo Ucci Obituary

Woburn, Mass. - Dr. Angelo Alfred Cosmo Ucci Jr., MD, PhD, of Woburn, Mass., a man of broad vision, boundless love and astonishing intelligence, died Dec. 22, 2023. Dr. Ucci was born Aug. 19, 1943, in Providence, R.I.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Eames Ucci, born Nov. 2, 1944, in Southampton, N.Y.; their two children, Angelo David Ucci and Rachel Sharon Walden, both of Reading, Mass.; and six grandchildren: Benjamin Matthew Walden, Angelo Jacob Ucci, Massimo Edward Ucci, Nicodemo Georgio Ucci, Gavin Richard O'Keefe and Delia Rosemary O'Keefe; as well as his daughter-in-law Michelle K. Ucci; son-in-law R. Joel O'Keefe; and granddaughter-in-law Olivia Walden.

Dr. Ucci graduated from Robert E. Fitch Senior High School in Groton, Class of 1961, from Providence College (Magna Cum Laude), Class of 1965, and from Tufts University School of Medicine, Class of 1974. Being the first recipient of Tufts' combined MD, PhD program, he recalled that he was not able to receive in person the PhD degree in the simultaneous, yet separately held ceremony at the University. Upon graduation, Dr. Ucci was awarded a research fellowship at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Md., where he fulfilled his military obligation during America's war in Vietnam, by becoming an officer in the Public Health Service. In 1976, Dr. Ucci joined the faculty at the Tufts New England Medical Center in Boston, where he taught anatomy, urology and pathology and ran the Electron Microscopic Diagnostic Laboratory. He taught for three months of 15 years in King Abdul Assis University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and attended sheiks and princes' courts there. His scholarly publications number in the hundreds.

Dr. Ucci studied fine art, drawing and painting and trained at the De Cordova Museum School of Art, as well as several summer programs at universities in New England. His studios were in Boston's Chinatown area and at his home. He was a member of several professional photography groups as well as the Depot Square art gallery in Lexington, Mass. His oil portraits were also shown in the Copley Square Gallery on Newbury Street in Boston.

Dr. Ucci was an appreciator of folk music and an ardent amateur guitarist. His weekly Wednesday open jam sessions in Somerville, Mass., attracted dozens of musicians and singers to his home. He never stopped exploring and creating useful and artful objects - his most recent work being a series of Alaskan Ulu style knives. He welcomed strangers, friends and family into his home and built his life around supporting others. He wanted nothing more than to welcome the stranger, newcomer, family member or friend to share a meal, discuss philosophies of every genre, join a musical jam session, or simply share fellowship.

He will be remembered as a robust embracer of life, a defender of scientific truth, a Renaissance man and an ardent professional physician and professor. May his generous soul rest in peace.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, in St. Barbara's Parish, 138 Cambridge Road, Woburn, Mass. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to calling hours from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, in the Lynch- Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn. Angie was one of my mentors as a resident at Tufts. Signing out with him was both an education and an experience to be savored. Beyond the cells and tissues, Angie taught me the advantage of concise and unambiguous diagnosis, as well as the wisdom of not taking oneself too seriously. May his memory be a blessing.

To the Ucci Family - my sincere condolences on the passing of Angelo. I lived across the street from the Ucci family in Noank on Sylvan. I was friends with his sister Judy. I remember Angelo going to the Noank/Mystic Library and returning with stacks of books. He was definitely slated for a great career as his obituary shows. May memories sustain you during this very difficult time.
