Anthony Janovicz Obituary

Norwich - Anthony C. Janovicz, 99, passed away June 8, 2022. Tony, Grandpa, Dziadzi was born Nov. 23, 1922, to Mariana (Borovski) and Andrjez Janovicz in Norwich. Against the odds, he survived as an infant delivered at less than 2 pounds. The story of his birth was portrayed in the historical novella, Until the Robin Walks on Snow, authored by his niece, Bernice (Janovicz) Rocque.

After graduating from Norwich Free Academy (1940) he enlisted in the Navy, serving in one of the earliest units of the SeaBees. In 1945, he married the love of his life, Albina Anthony. With the help of his brother Mike, Tony built his home on Vergason Avenue. On the property, he started one of the first commercial Christmas tree farms in Connecticut. Without the benefit of a college engineering degree, he earned his license as Land Surveyor in 1961 and Professional Engineer in 1974 while working with the Connecticut DOT. He co-founded Towne Engineering with his nephew, Don Aubrey, and worked for the Town of Old Lyme after his first retirement.

He enjoyed sailing, archery, cheering on the Sox and Huskies, beekeeping, and gardening. He valued service including support of the Boy Scouts, regular blood donation, and driving fellow seniors to health appointments. He was a long-time member of Sacred Heart Church in Norwichtown. When he and Albina moved to White Oaks Retirement Living in Manchester (2013) he attended St. John's Episcopal Church in Vernon.

Tony is survived by his sons, Michael (Jody) of Venice, Fla. and Indianapolis, Ind.; Paul (Sharon) of Willington; daughter Monica (Scott) Powers of Conway, S.C.; and his little sister, Veronica Aubrey of Norwich. He was Grandpa to eight grandchildren, Chrissy, Stephanie, Andrew, Amy, Anna, Dan, Sarah and Drew; Dziadzi to 20 great-grandchildren with 2 great-great-grandchildren on the way. He was predeceased in 2016 by his wife whom he joins in eternal rest. He said many times how he looked forward to being together again with his beloved Albina.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 20, at St John's Episcopal Church, Vernon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to St. John's Episcopal Church, 523 Hartford Turnpike, Vernon, for outreach efforts confronting food insecurity. To Michael, Your parents were such special people. We knew them best as parishioners at Sacred Heart. You and I were at Samuel Huntington School together. My first husband, Mitch, knew them well before we were even married. And then, your mom taught my daughter Susan the violin at your house on Vergason Ave., and later played the violin at Susan's wedding at St. Patrick Cathedral. They were truly good Christians that did much for many. My second husband and I live in Estero, FL now, and I just saw this obituary as we are visiting in CT for a couple of months. My condolences to all of your family.

Tony was the kindest and most caring person I ever met. He was a true volunteer from the heart kind of person. He volunteered under me for many years taking other seniors to medical appointments, grocery shopping and a friendly visitor to homebound individuals. Tony always had a kind word to say and a beautiful smile. Tony genuinely cared about the welfare of others and went above and beyond his duty as a volunteer. In his spare time, he handcrafted sticks into elaborate canes for his clients in need. He gifted one to me after a back injury that I cherish. Everyone in my house knew not to touch mom´s stick because Tony made that for her. I only hope that Tony laid enough seed for others to see and follow his example as a passionate first-class volunteer. Thank you, Tony.
