Antonio Scolaro Obituary

Norwich - Antonio "Tony" Scolaro passed away peacefully with his family by his side Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2022. He was born in Norwich, December 1, 1941, the son of Italian immigrants, Rosaria (Sammataro) and Matteo Scolaro.

Tony graduated from Norwich Free Academy in 1960. Following graduation, he served in the United States Army, and was honorably discharged in 1965. The youngest of eight children, he learned the value of hard work, and dedicated 30 years to the City of Norwich Fire Department. During his career, he served as treasurer for the IAFF Local 892, fire marshal, captain and retired as deputy chief in 1996. Tony also worked part time at Vocatura's Bakery for many years. After his retirement, he became a "snowbird" wintering at his home in Heathrow, Fla., enjoying the sunshine, cycling, and spending time with family and friends.

On July 1, 1967, Tony married his Irish sweetheart Tina McGill, and they recently celebrated 55 years of marriage. In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by his daughter the Honorable Judge Tesha Scolaro Ballou and her husband Scott Ballou of Melbourne, Fla.; his devoted and loving niece Mary Kelly and her husband Brendan Murphy of Whitestone, N.Y.; his extended family, including very dear sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Joseph, Matteo, "Biff," and Gus Scolaro; and sisters, Irene Jarry, Mary Batten and Nellie MacDonald.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. meeting directly at the cathedral, Tuesday, Nov. 15, at St. Patrick's Cathedral, 213 Broadway, Norwich, There will be no calling hours. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Tony's name to the American Cancer Society, the National Kidney Foundation, or the Florida Little Dog Rescue - https://www.floridalittledogrescue.com.

Tina and Family, I am so sorry you have lost Tony He was a gentleman and a treasure. I met him as a young police officer and remained friendly with him for decades. He always had a laugh and a smile. Take care.
