Archie Swindell Obituary

Groton - Archie C. Swindell Jr., 89, of Groton, passed away Sunday, Nov. 2, 2025, with his wife Elizabeth by his side.

Arche was born in Greenville, Texas Sept. 26. 1936, the son of Archie Swindell Sr. and Louise Ellis Swindell. He was married in 2014, to his loving wife, Elizabeth Brown Swindell, at the Bill Memorial Library in Groton.

Born in the heart of Texas, Archie grew a love of nature and music. After earning his degree in chemistry and journalism at SMU, Dallas, he served in the U.S. Army in Germany for three years. On his return to stateside, he married his first wife Dolores "Dee." They were married for 45 years.

He earned a master's degree in nutritional science and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Cornell University, followed by a post doctoral fellowship at Duke University and non-degree study in statistics at Yale. Archie served as a principal research scientist and non-clinical statistician at Pfizer for several decades. After retiring, he started his own company, Quantitative Services, serving drug prevention communities.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Matthew and wife Shinobu and grandsons, Marcus and Lucas of Newton, Mass., and Randy Swindell of Harrington, Maine, and granddaughter Jessica Swindell of Phenix City, Ala.; and his sister Sara Gilliam of Dallas, Texas. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his late wife and mother of his children, Dolores "Dee" Holland; and his brother-in-law John Gilliam; and daughter-in-law Louise.

In the last 15 years of their lives together, Archie grew close to his wife's children and especially with the grandchildren: Carter, Quinn, Mateo, Cora, Diego, Gemma and Darcy.

Archie served his community as a long-time member of Groton RTM, Board of Education and the Groton Town Council, a board member of the CT Early Music Society and The Friends of Eastern CT Symphony. His interests in photography, painting and baking, especially sour cherry pie were shared and enjoyed by his friends and family!

The family would like to thank the CNAs and Yale Hospice nurses who shepherded us through his final days. Thank you to the Staff of Apple Rehab and Lawrence+ Memorial Hospital, as well Dr. Troy Frazer and especially a deep respect with gratitude to all the staff, nurses and physicians at Davita Dialysis who cared for Archie the last decade.

Please join us in a celebration of Archie's life and legacy from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at Groton Congregational Church, 162 Monument Street, Groton. Please come as you are and stay for as long as you'd like.

Yesterday

Groton was lucky to have Archie! His wise counsel and good humor will be sorely missed. He was a good friend and an amazing public servant.

To the family of Archie-

It is with great sadness to learn of this news. Archie was such a pleasure to have known over the years and we were so happy to see him involved again returning to the Groton RTM as a member. His knowledge, fortitude and wise nature helped his decisions in service to his community and this was felt when he entered the room. Groton has lost a great citizen. May he rest in peace.
