Barney Allen Obituary

Groton - Barney H. Allen, 92, passed away Sunday, April 25, 2021. Known to all as Barney, he was born Aug. 3, 1928, in Brooklyn, N.Y. At age 17, he joined the Navy to serve his country near the end of World War II. His service as a torpedoman continued into the Korean War, where he served aboard the USS Robert A. Owens (DD-827), the USS Barton (DD-722), and the USS Henley (DD-762). On the USS Frontier (AD-25), Barney became a deep-sea rescue diver. His service bridged into the Vietnam War before he retired from the Navy in 1965, while serving on the USS Fulton (AS-11).

Barney joined the Waterford Police Department in 1965, and said they are "Second to none." In 1983, he qualified as a Bomb Technician for the ATF. Promoted to Lieutenant, he served the community until he retired in 1991. Alongside law enforcement, he worked 32 years as a longshoreman for Local 1411.

An avid fisherman, Barney loved boating on his fishing boat, the Boston Blacky. In his later years, his love for animals prevailed by adopting neighborhood stray cats.

A lifetime member of the Connecticut 100 Club, Barney also belonged to the Brainard Lodge of Masons, Sphinx Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. , The Tuckerbung Association, VFW, American Legion, and the Groton Elks.

His death was preceded by his wife, Ruth Margret Hoy Allen; and stepchildren, Marilyn and Steven "Skip". Barney lost Ruth to Alzheimer's Disease and is known to the hospital staff as "Tootsie" for all the candy he brought to those who provide so much care.

Survivors include Barry S. Allen and his wife Laurie E. Allen; and stepdaughter Beverly Martin.

A private funeral service will be held at Starr Burying Ground, Groton. There are no calling hours. Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington Street, New London has been entrusted with his care. Barry and Family,
My sincere condolences for the loss of your dad.
Had great times on Boston Blacky fishing out in the "Race" and working with you both at state pier longshoreman. I will miss Barney's "handwave" when driving up Bailey Hill. God Bless

Barry and Family,
My sincere condolences for the loss of your dad.
I will always cherish our fishing excusions about "Boston Blacky" when we came into the Elks dock and laid out our "catch" of mackerel and our dads were so proud of a successful fishing trip with their sons.
They were true "buds" and hopefully are reunited again.
Here's to Barney Allen "one of the GOOD GUY'S"

He was a great American, and always had a friendly word. I always enjoyed speaking with him, especially when he'd talk about the old days in the Navy.
RIP Mr. Allen

Barry, There are no words. I am heartbroken for your loss. He meant the world to me over the last 25 years. I’m sorry I never was able to say goodbye but I’m sure he knew how much he touched me. Very sorry for your loss. June Cummings...alias June the mail lady!
