Barry McVICAR Obituary

McVICAR, Barry Marshall
February 25, 1927 - March 8, 2013
Barry passed away peacefully with family by his side on Friday, March 8, 2013 at the age of 86. He was born in Winnipeg and received his degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Manitoba in 1949 where he was very active in student affairs. He married Pauline Broadfoot in 1950 and moved west to the oilfields where he held executive positions in several oil and gas companies, including his own, for the next 40 years. Barry ended his career as President and CEO of the Consolidated Group of Companies. Barry was an avid paddler on Manitoba lakes and rivers. A passionate life-long skier, he yodelled happily down his beloved mountains across North America. He was an amateur radio operator who enjoyed connecting with fellow hams around the world. He was a diligent volunteer with many organizations including the Post Polio Society, CODA for the 1968 and 1972 bids for the Winter Olympic Games and the Calgary River Valleys Committee. Barry truly enjoyed belonging to various boards and associations, especially Probus and the Knights of the Round Table. On special occasions, he would often deliver a speech or poem with eloquence and humour. Barry was devoted to his family, friends and community. Barry is survived by his wife of 62 years, Pauline, their two sons David (Sabine) of Munich and Jamie (Bonnie) of Canmore, daughter Tara of Los Angeles, six grandchildren Max, Raphael, Columbia, Sam, Niki and Lily, and Lily's father Greg Pulier of Los Angeles. He was predeceased by his brother Jackie, sister Beverly and his daughter Marcia. A celebration of Barry's life will be held at the Southern Alberta Pioneers Memorial Building at 3625 - 4 Street S.W., Calgary, tomorrow, Thursday, March 14, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family deeply appreciates the cheerful and compassionate care given to Barry by the staff at Heartland, Bethany Care Centre. For many years Barry was the leader of our annual wandering ski group. Always first off the hill and often the first one down. It was a privelage to know him and call him a friend.

My condolences to Barry's wife and family. I had the pleasure of meeting Barry through our mutual pursuit of the McVicar's genealogy, which stretches back to the 1500's in North Uist in the Scottish Hebrides.
