Benjamin Bundesmann Obituary

Mystic - On Thursday, Sept. 8, 2022, Benjamin Eric "Ben" Bundesmann, age 25, of Mystic, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones. Ben's faith was unwavering, giving him the courage and grace to pass with dignity.

Ben is survived by his mother Michele L. DeVeau, Stonington; father Mark W. Bundesmann and stepmother Rachael Seery-Bundesmann, Mystic; brothers, Max C. Bundesmann, Dover, N.H., and Jacob A. Bundesmann, Stonington/Mystic; stepbrother William M. Seery and his wife Jenna D. Seery, Uncasville; and stepsister Victoria A. Hersant, Brooklyn, N.Y. Additionally, he is survived by maternal grandmother Sandra DeVeau, Mystic; uncles, Robert DeVeau, Mystic, and Timothy Deveau, Mystic; and aunt Tabitha Deveau, Mystic; his paternal grandparents, Ragnhild Bundesmann and Herbert Bundesmann, Kirkland, Wash.; step-grandparents William and Nancy Seery, North Stonington; aunts, Evelyn Bundesmann, Kirland, Wash., Brindy Bundesmann, Seattle, Wash., and Merkys Gomez, Mercer Island, Wash.; uncles, Craig Peeper, Kirkland, Wash., Christopher Bundesmann, Seattle, Wash., and Dr. Michael Bundesmann, Mercer Island, Wash.; as well as many cousins on both sides. He was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Robert A. DeVeau. Ben will also be missed by his dogs, Faust and Buttercup.

Ben grew up in Mystic, and graduated from Stonington High School in 2014. He attended the University of Connecticut, where he earned a BA in statistics with a minor in political science. During his years at UConn, Ben was an active member of the Saint Thomas Aquinas Chapel Parish and Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Center (STACC) Community. He participated in the College Republicans, UConn Students for Life, Turning Point USA, Knights of Columbus (Storrs Chapter), and FOCUS Missionaries. Ben flourished at UConn. He shared recently that his senior year was the best year of his life! Ben made lasting friendships with wonderful friends who supported him through his final days. He traveled throughout the U.S. to various conferences and spent time volunteering in New Mexico, where he took up horseback riding.

In 2020, Ben began work at the National Cancer Institute, of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), as an ethics specialist in the Office of Ethics. Ben loved his work and excelled at it. Working remotely allowed Ben the opportunity to be actively involved with Saint Patrick Parish in Mystic, Enders Island Young Adult Group, the Immaculate Conception Young Adult Group (Westerly, R.I.), and the Knights of Columbus (Mystic).

Ben was an avid reader, enjoying a breadth of materials from science fiction, philosophy, legal and religious topics. He had the remarkable ability to retain the large amount of information that he read. His bookcase was never large enough. Ben also had a great sense of humor that was often self-deprecating and never at the expense of others. His jokes will always be remembered.

The family would like to extend our heartfelt thank you to Jerry and Beth from Spectrum Physical Therapy; Katie, Lynn and Bonita from the VNA; Julie, Jim, Fr. Kiril, and Rob from Hospice; Jessica from ALS Association of CT; Paul, Christine, Father Ellis, Father Cap and Father Kevin. We will never forget the care you gave to Ben, and the support you provided our family.

Ben's family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, at the Mystic Funeral Home located on Route 1 in Mystic. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 16, at St. Patrick Church, 32 East Main Street, Mystic. Following his Mass, he will be buried at St. Patrick Cemetery, Mystic. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for charitable donations to St. Patrick's Parish (Mystic, CT), FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) America or the ALS Association (ALSA) of CT.
