Cecelia Kennedy Obituary

Groton - Cecelia "Lee" Kennedy, 95, passed peacefully Saturday, Oct. 9, 2021 at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital. She grew up in New London, the daughter of the late John and Florence Benham Affeldt.

She was predeceased by her siblings: Gilbert, Tracy, Harry, Anne and John; as well as her former husband Joseph Kennedy Sr. She is survived by her seven children: Joseph Kennedy Jr. of Groton, John Kennedy (Kelly) of Maine, Nancy Miller (Jerry) of Florida, James Kennedy (Petra) of East Lyme, Jean Kennedy of Groton, Patty Kennedy DiScipio (Vinnie) of Niantic, and David Kennedy (Katy) of Groton. She is also survived by 21 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. S

She was almost a lifelong resident of Groton. She had a blast living in an apartment in AHEPA Niantic, for the last 11 years, moving back to Groton to reside with Jean for the last several months.

Lee worked for many years as a therapeutic recreation director at Canterbury Villa, formerly Mary Kenny Nursing Home, in Waterford. She became a volunteer at the SECT Center of the Blind in New London, as an advocate for her beloved sister-in-law Mary Kennedy, and through grants, provided a proper arts & crafts program for countless vision impaired clients over the years. Her last formal employment was through the TVCCA Foster Grandparent Program at Riverfront Children's Center in Groton, retiring in 2008, at the age of 83. She dedicated her life to helping people - especially the very young and the very old - and found great joy in convincing people they could do things they didn't think they could. She continued to build incredible friendships through crocheting, cooking, crafts and card games with her wonderful neighbors at AHEPA. Lee loved everyone she met; and they all loved her back!

Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons East Lyme Funeral Home, 48 Grand St., Niantic. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Gramma Lee Kennedy to Riverfront Children's Center, 476 Thames Street, Groton, CT 06340. I was saddened to read of Aunt Lee's passing. I've been out of touch with all of you for so many years. My best memories are of all of us cousins at Poochie and Grammies house as kids at Thanksgiving and Christmas. I remember your Mom as a very sweet person who always was kind. My deepest sympathy.
