Charles Yarnall Obituary

Quaker Hill - Doug passed away peacefully July 21, 2022, at the age of 84. A loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and coach. Doug was born in West Chester, Pa., to his parents, Charles and Dorothy Yarnall. Doug graduated from West Chester High School in 1956, and was a four-year letterman on the Syracuse Basketball Team, graduating in 1960. He received his graduate degree at Springfield College in 1964, in physical education.

He started working for Mitchell College in New London in 1964, in the athletic department. In addition to teaching, he spent several years coaching the men's basketball team and teaching students and people from the community how to sail on the Thames River. His children would often run into members of the community who fondly remember their dad teaching them now to sail. He was the athletic director until his retirement in 2001, and was inducted into Mitchell's Hall of Fame, the New England Basketball Hall of Fame and is having the athletic center renamed in his honor. His legacy lives on at Mitchell College and with the community that he mentored throughout his tenure.

He was active with the Crossroads Presbyterian Church, serving several terms as a trustee and helping with various maintenance tasks around the church.

Doug was a man of many passions including basketball, running, swimming, biking, sailing and golfing, but his main passion was always his family. He married the love of his life, Heather Whipps, in 1961.

He is survived by his wife, children: Heidi Yarnall Crowell, her fiancé Joe Donovan, Bruce Yarnall, his wife Catherine, and godson Bryan Herron, his wife Karen; and seven grandchildren: Wesley Crowell, Clayton Crowell, Rachel Crowell, Elizabeth Yarnall, Izadora Yarnall, Alexandra Herron and Adryan Herron. He is also survived by his brother Jerry; and sister Constance (Yarnall) Windus and her husband Don.

Doug's career and list of projects kept him busy, but it was always his priority to attend his children and grandchildren's games, graduations and major life events. After retiring in 2001, he continued to coach his grandchildren with constructive feedback and praise. During his summers on Cape Cod, he always had a project to work on and his favorite sidekicks were his grandkids. He made sure they learned valuable life skills from painting the house to how to properly dry a dish and to clean the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher.

The love, kindness and generosity that Doug displayed lives on as we all try to carry forward the values that he instilled in those closest to him. He will be fondly remembered as a friendly caring man who acted as a father to people who entered his life. His family and all who had the pleasure to know and love him will dearly miss him.

Calling Hours for Doug are from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 48 Grand Street, Niantic. A memorial service will take place 11 a.m. Thursday, July 28, at the Crossroads Presbyterian Church, 70 Crossroad Waterford.

To the Yarnell Family,

I just came across this news that Mr. Yarnell passed away last summer (I wish I would have known sooner). I emailed the athletic department a few summers back to try and get in touch with him to let him know what an influence he was on my life, but I never received a response. My name is Phil Daubel, I am from the Spokane ,WA. (Most know where that is now because Gonzaga put us on the map). I was an 18 year old kid moving across the country (never been that far away from home in my life) to try my luck at playing soccer and basketball at Mitchell College and pursue a career as a teacher and coach. One of the first people I talked to was Mr. Yarnell, he was so warm and welcoming and he connected with me telling me about a time he visited the coast of Washington State. Mr. Yarnell assured my parents that I would be okay and he would keep an eye on me and he did. He gave me my first job in athletics supervising the gym on the weekends. I could always go into the athletic office and talk to Mr. Yarnell, mainly just normal everyday conversation. When I graduated from Mitchell College he was sure to let my parents know that he really enjoyed having me at Mitchell College and I was a great asset to Mitchell College. He made my mom feel so proud of me. Mr. Yarnell helped my dreams come true of playing college basketball and soccer. Now I am a teacher and basketball and soccer coach. Mr. Yarnell helped give me the foundation to become an excellent educator. He was also a major inspiration in me getting my masters in Sport Administration. God Bless Mr. Yarnell and his family. He was an amazing man. [email protected]

I was so lucky to be hired by Doug to teach in the athletic department at Mitchell College in 1987. I worked for Doug till he retired. He was by far the best boss I ever had! My heart breaks for everyone who loved him, my condolences to Heather, Heidi, Bruce and their families.

I played college ball for Coach Yarnall and no doubt he helped form my heart and head when it comes to collegiate sports and education. When Coach Yarnall spoke everyone listened. Kind and caring to all and took time to ensure everyone who met him felt like they were important. May God bless the family and leave only cherished memories. Thank you coach for making a difference in my life.

We met Doug many years ago through mutual friends. Our areas of interest were basketball, golf, and sailing. For the past few years, Doug was in our golf four sums on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday outings at GNCC. His game was truly improving. When he announced a medical procedure that was to take place at Yale/New Haven, our anxiety concerns were raised primarily because of his blood circulation issues. You will not meet a finer gentleman than Doug. He shall be missed dearly. Our sympathies and prayers are offered to his extended family and of course to Heather. May his memory be eternal.

Mr Yarnell taught my two older brothers and myself how to sail.
Today I'm involved racing every Wednesday night at the mudheads. But my sailing started with Doug Yarnell teaching me. He was a fantastic teacher.

What a GENTLEMAN!!! While I was attending Mitchell in 1970-71 Mr. Yarnall, then BB Coach, gave me a chance to whistle his home scrimmages to save a few dollars. That began a long career for me as an official which I will never regret. Rest in Peace you wonderful Man. There will never be another like you. Our condolences.
