Claire Scanlon Obituary

Stonington - Claire "Ma" Scanlon, of Pawcatuck, passed away peacefully Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, with family by her side after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Claire was born Oct. 23, 1950, in New London, the daughter of the late James and Margaret (Kenyon) Scanlon. Claire was known as "Ma" to many who knew her. She had the grandest spirit of anyone who lived. We will always remember her love for life, her love for family and love for her friends. Ma was a special woman who through thick and thin, sickness and health, always had time for a laugh, a smile and an "I Love You". She will be forever missed.

Ma loved music, the beach, the New York Yankees, chatting on the phone and she especially loved every second she spent with her grandchildren.

She cherished time with her extended family including her "identical cousin" Beth Connolly and all of her Kenyon cousins, her nieces including Denise Donelin and Patricia Varma, and also her many lifelong friends from The Bronx including Thurston Delaney Sr.

She is predeceased by her sister, Loretta Tardibuono; and her niece, Becky Boyd.

Claire is survived by her children, Thurston Delaney and his wife, Shelley, of Norwich, Darron Delaney of New London, and Amber Broderick and her husband, Steve, of North Stonington. Claire has six grandchildren, Mackenzie, Darron Jr., Quintin, Nora, Sophie and Anna Claire. She is also survived by her sister, Barbara Boyd; and her brother, Jimmy Scanlon.

The family would like to express their gratitude for the exceptional care and compassion Claire received from Hospice of SECT, VNA and Mystic Health and Rehabilitation Center.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday for a memorial gathering, at Impellitteri-Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Ave., New London. A memorial mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, at St. Mary Star of the Sea, 10 Huntington St., New London. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Hospice of SECT.

Thurston, Darron, Amber and family; Your mom was an amazing woman that I was so fortunate to call my friend. Her wonderful wit is something I will continue to share with others, but it was her compassion, values, honesty and zest for life that I will try and emulate. For this made Claire's natural beauty even more exquisite.
