Cornelius Sullivan Obituary

Salem - Cornelius "Neil" William Sullivan, 85, of Salem, entered eternal life Sunday Oct. 16, 2022, with his family and the love of his life Jean by his side. He was born Aug. 6, 1937, in New London, the son of the late Joseph and Marguerite (Hester) Sullivan, Sr.

He attended local schools and graduated from New London High School, class of 1955. He enlisted in the Connecticut Army National Guard and was honorably discharged. Neil was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, the former Eleanor "Jean" Dickson, June 4, 1960, at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church. Mrs. Sullivan survives him. He retired after 42 years of service at Electric Boat where he was a mechanical design supervisor. He and his wife Jean volunteered serving for many years at St. Vincent de Paul; one of his greatest gifts he taught us was to always be humble and kind. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus Seaside Council #17, a communicant of St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, and also attended Mass at St. Joseph Church. He found peace and serenity down at the barn with his animals and working in his garden over the years.

Beside his beloved wife Jean of 62 years of marriage, he will be deeply missed by his four children: son Michael and Sue Sullivan, daughter Kathryn Amanti, daughter Terri and Bob Benjamin all of Salem, and daughter Eileen Sullivan and fiancé Kevin Keefe of Lebanon; and two sisters, Catherine Zachas and Fran and Stephen Poole all of Salem. He was very proud of his nine amazing grandchildren: Michael, Mickey J., Nicholas, Megan, Colleen, Zachary, Kayla, Courtney and Nevin and their spouses; and ten great-grandchildren; amongst many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his brother Joseph T. Sullivan Jr.; and brother-in-law Lew Zachas. Family meant so much to him; and we will find great comfort in sharing wonderful memories of Neil, Neily, Dad, Brother, Poppa and Uncle Neil. Many friendships that continue to this day from being a friend of Bill W for over thirty years and also the memorable Corner Boys have always held a special place in his heart.

His family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at the Impellitteri-Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Ave., New London. A funeral Mass of Christian Burial will held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 10 Huntington Street, New London. Interment follows in St. Mary Cemetery with military honors.

I met Neil through the St. Vincent de Paul Society and the Sunday breakfast service at St. Mary's. "He taught us to always be humble and kind".....not with words, but with his presence. He was a gift from God.

Sully was my first Supervisor when I joined EB 36 years ago. I can honestly say he helped me become the man I am today. I remember him well and think of him often. It is with deep regret that I learned of his loss so I can only imagine how his family and friends feel. Sully made a difference in a lot of peoples lives and will truly be missed. May his memory be eternal.

Sully was a great guy, had a great personality and was a pleasure to work with for many years at Electric Boat. Sully supported the construction of the build of Trident class submarines along with his duties of a Mechanical Design Supervisor. Sully was very knowledgeable and gentleman to work besides. To his family my thoughts are with you at this time.
Sincerely
