Douglas Maynard Obituary

Old Lyme - Douglas "Doug" Lorenzo Maynard, 77, of Old Lyme passed away March 30, 2020. He was born in New London, the son of Lorenzo Oscar Maynard and Julia Bump Maynard.

Douglas was a submarine veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during the Vietnam War. He proudly served aboard the USS Clamagore (SS-343) and was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal for his valor during an explosion that occurred on the vessel. Petty Officer Maynard fashioned repair parts by hand, on the boat, to keep the vessel going without disruption. Following his service in the Navy, Doug worked at Watson's Esso Garage in Old Lyme, which he purchased in 1971, and operated as Doug's Garage until 2003. Following the closure of the garage, he went on to work at Laysville Hardware Store, sometimes being referred to as the "Mayor of Old Lyme." Doug loved cars, boats, dogs and, most of all, people. He was a very special man and friend. Doug was a very active member of the community, as a long time member of the Submarine Vets, American Legion and the Masons.

Doug is survived by his wife Pauline; son David Maynard; brother Jeff Maynard, both of Old Lyme; and sister Corrinne Veach of Wilmington, N.C.

Due to the coronavirus, a memorial service will be held at a later date that will be announced. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his memory may be made to the Lymes' Senior Center, 26 Town Woods Road, Old Lyme, CT 06371 or the American Legion Post 0041, PO Box 982, Old Lyme, CT 06371. Fulton-Theroux Funeral Service, Old Lyme, is handling arrangements.

I am sorry I did not get to know him better. He obviously was a great treasure to our beloved town of old lyme.

So sad to hear the news. I first knew Doug when I was in Grade 10, he in Grade 9. JV basketball, Sunday School?? I particularly remember him from the garage, either working for Nels or running the show himself. Always a good guy. The last time I recall having a long chat with him was about 10 years ago when he volunteered to be interviewed by the Oral History Committee of the Historical Society. I did the interview and it ended up being more a chat between two old-timers about what the town was like during the 50s. I also saw him about 5-6 years ago at Dr. Walker's office. Brief chat.
I'm sure you all have great memories of a great guy. Treasure them. With deepest sympathy, Mark Lander

Pauline: Maureen and I offer you our deepest sympathies. I first met him when he started working for Nelson and he took care of my cars until he sold the garage. Throughout this time he was always trustworthy and very friendly. This friendship continued until his recent passing. I know he had health issues but never complained. We have lost a wonderful citizen of Old Lyme.

Doug was my employer for many years. I started working at Doug's while still in high school. Doug trained me for my career in automotive repair. He was a good teacher in life and in cars. I to this day use and pass along the lessons in life he gave me. He and Pauline always treated me like family and I always felt lucky to work at the garage. Doug will be missed by his friends, customer's, and myself.

Your sense of humor and dry wit will be missed. So will your generosity and kindness. RIP brother. Love Sis

Doug was my Father. He has always been there for me; for his wife; for his family; and for friends known and unknown.

Because of him, I learned how to maintain relationships with people, but most of all, how to be a better person. I became permanently disabled in 2003. I have suffered from a lot of depression after everything that happened. My dad, Doug, always told me that no matter how bad I thought I had it, that there was always somebody worse off than me. It was his way of looking at the World. He loved to give of himself and did not keep a record of who owed what to whom.

Growing up as his son always made me proud. He was the coolest Dad in the World, after all, he owned a gas station and repair shop. What young son, wouldn't love that? There was always something to 'get into'. Dad gave me an old VW Bug when I was 11. It was an abandoned vehicle that he had towed in. Dad fixed it up and showed me how to drive it. You wouldn't know it now, but there was plenty of property behind "Doug's Garage" to drive on and have fun.

There are many stories I could share, but I know all of you have stories too. Suffice it to say that I was quite fortunate to have had the privilege of Douglas L. Maynard as my father.

Dad, you are sorely missed. Your loving son, David
