Edward Davis Obituary

Providence - Edward E. Davis passed away at his home in Providence, R.I., on Aug. 4, 2016.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Sept. 4, 1923, he was the son of the late Edward F. Davis and Evangeline L. Davis. His family moved from Pittsburgh to Westerly in 1940. He completed his secondary education at the Moses Brown School from which he graduated in 1940. He entered Brown University in 1941, only to have military service require his withdrawal in December 1942. He joined the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1943 and received training at the State University of New York Maritime College. He was commissioned ensign USNR in 1944.

He married Dorothy (Moore) Davis in January 1947. They enjoyed 63 happy years of marriage until Dorothy's death in May 2010.

Ed's first civilian employment was with the Gulf Oil Corp., as a regional agent in northeastern Connecticut from January 1947 until May 1952. He then accepted a position with the George C. Moore Co., in Westerly. He functioned in several capacities with the Moore Co. in sales management, as a director and the corporation secretary and as chairman of the pension committee.

Ed's love for sailing and ships began during his teenage years when he crewed on a Watch Hill 15, "Pixie" with Harriet Urban. In his later years, Ed and Dorothy went on many cruises including one to Antarctica. Ed enjoyed many recreational activities including skiing, swimming, running and riding motorcycles.

Ed is survived by his three children, Candace Sanford, Dorothy Singer and Charles Davis, seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and his sister-in-law, Patricia M. Moore.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, in Calvary Church, Stonington.
