He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Theresa L. (Vinopal) McQuade of Westerly, his son and daughter-in-law, Michael J. and Diane McQuade of Pawcatuck; his son and daughter-in-law, Thomas E. and Jean McQuade of Rockville; his daughter and son-in-law, Patricia L. and Wayne Ritter of Rye, N.H.; his daughter and son-in-law, Mary T. and Richard Giudice of Westerly; eight grandchildren, Courtney N. McQuade, Fiona A. McQuade, Brendan I. McQuade, Michela J. McQuade, Mark T. McQuade, Noah C. Ritter, Jennifer T. Ritter and Molly M. Giudice; one great-grandchild, Nohli Ritter; two sisters, Mary McGraw and Betty Saber; and several nieces and nephews.
Edward was predeceased by four brothers, Henry, Joseph, Arthur and George McQuade.
Mr. McQuade was born in Riverside, R.I., on March 12, 1926, the son of the late Henry and Jane (Geoghan) McQuade. He was a member of the United States Navy serving in World War II. After serving his country, Edward became the Founder and manager of McQuade's Supermarkets. He was on the Board of Directors of the Rhode Island Grocer's Association and Roger William's Foods. He was an integral part of changing the Blue Laws in Rhode Island. Mr. McQuade was an avid sailor who was a member of the Westerly Yacht Club and a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at noon on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, at St. Pius X Church, 44 Elm St., Westerly. Burial will take place at River Bend Cemetery, Westerly. Calling hours will take place from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Rushlow-Iacoi Funeral Home, 64 Friendship St., Westerly.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Edward's name can be made to the St. Pius X Church, 44 Elm St., Westerly, RI 02891. This is for the Edward & Theresa McQuade Foundation, for the upkeep of St. Pius X School.
