Elias Joseph "Lou" Hage

Elias Joseph "Lou" Hage obituary, Waterford, CT

Elias Hage Obituary

Waterford - Elias Joseph Hage, 84, of Seabreeze Drive, passed away at home on Monday, August 7, 2017. He was surrounded by his family and his devoted friend, Ed Najim.

Elias was the only child of Lebanese immigrants, Munira Jimal and Joseph Simon Hage of New London. His mother called him "Lou" to distinguish him from his uncle and namesake who also lived with them. The nickname stuck. Losing his mother to cancer when he was 11 years old affected Elias profoundly. With few close relatives and an expansive heart, Elias spent his life creating an ever-growing circle of family and friends that extended to the community at large.

Elias attended Bulkeley High School, where he graduated in 1951, and attended every reunion until this year. He graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1955 and served in the U.S. Navy from 1955-1957, after which he worked a brief stint in retail at J.C. Penny in upstate New York. Retail was not his calling, but it was then that he met the love of his life, Eleanor Nicholas, while visiting a distant relation in Utica. They married in 1960 and raised four children in New London before moving to Waterford in 1973. Elias and Eleanor shared 51 years together, before Eleanor died in 2011.

Beloved Teacher

Following the advice of his father, Elias found his true calling as a teacher. For 38 years, Elias primarily taught history and economics at Lyme/Old Lyme High School where he inspired generations of students, several of whom later became friends and kept in touch with him throughout the years."He's an institution here," said Principal W. Scott Brown at the time of Elias's retirement. "There are few who have such a soulful relationship with the students and community." He was passionate about the subject matter and personally invested in the success of his students. He had a knack for making students want to do their best, motivating them with a combination of respect, praise, and even guilt. He took his classes on unforgettable field trips to New York City every year to see the UN, the The New York Stock Exchange, a Broadway show, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Spanish Harlem.

Lover of the Arts

Elias fell in love with opera listening to radio broadcasts as a child. His first purchase was a recording of Enrico Caruso that he played on a hand-crank Victrola. He loved the theater, attending plays and musicals in New York, Goodspeed Opera House and the Eugene O'Neill theater in Waterford. He was a patron of these organizations and many other philanthropic causes. He shared his passion for the arts with his children and grandchildren, taking them to plays, concerts, operas and museums.

Friendships

Elias genuinely loved people and cherished those who shared a history with him. Entertaining friends with food and lively conversation to celebrate joyous times, and moral support during difficult ones, made life meaningful for Elias. His friendships lasted a lifetime, maintaining childhood friends and making new ones in each phase of his life. He had the kind of personality that drew people in, making each person feel special. One friend said that the greatest compliment you can give to someone in our community is to say, "You are just like Lou" or "You are just like Nori (his wife)."

Family

Elias was never more happy than when his entire family was gathered in his home in front of the massive Christmas tree, taking long swims together at the beach, or piled into the family car for vacation. "As long as we are together" was his refrain.

Elias was a devout Catholic with a special devotion to the Virgin Mary in memory of his mother.

He is survived by his four children, Joseph Elias Hage and his wife, Traci, John Luke Hage and his wife, Lydia, Sarah Marie Hage and her husband, Mark Eckard, and Catherine Ann Hage and her partner, Reno Rhind; as well as five grandchildren, Lukas Hage, Joelle Hage, Isabelle Hage, Giuliana Hage, and Gabriela Hage. and many extended family members.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 10, in St. Joseph's Church, 17 Squire St., New London. Interment to follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 9, at Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Elias J. Hage History/Economics Award Lyme-Old Lyme High School, St. Joseph's School in New London or Center for Hospice Care Southeast Connecticut.

Got an email, saw this link, clicked on it and saw his picture...and the only thing that came to mind, was that this man always had a smile, warm greeting, hug, and true enjoyment of living. I did and still do learn from him.

Mr. Hage was a consummate gentleman and a renaissance man. He was simultaneously joyful and gentle and firm, always passionate about history and life, and one of the best listeners and most inspiring speakers I have known. He truly cared for and believed in all of us his students as individuals, both in his classroom and beyond. He made time for everyone and was never superficial about his inquiries, which I find to be a rare and ideal quality for a teacher and a fellow human being. It is a true pleasure to have known him during and after high school. I am sure that his gift of his inner light has lit many many more candles throughout his journey. He will be well remembered. Thank you Mr. Hage!

Sincerely,

Class of 1973. Mr. Hage was one of my favorite teachers! His enthusiasm, creativity and kindness meant so much to me as I stumbled through adolescence. He made me think, he made me do things we didn't want to do (UGH, the oral report!), he encouraged me. I'm happy to have been lucky enough to be in his class. I like to think he and my dad are having a laugh together right about now. :) My condolences and my thoughts are with his family.

So many great memories: long hikes in the Connecticut woods, a crazy trip to Vermont in 1972, talking politics at the house on Gorton street when I was only 9 years old and the Lebanese food was always delicious in the Hage house. A great life, a giant of Southeastern Connecticut - made all the better for his gift of kindness. He remembered others and he remembered old times. May we all be so fortunate.

To fellow friends and the family of Mr.Hage, I am sad to hear about our loss.
Bumping into Mr. Hage over the years has always been Great. When he asked "how are you doing?", he really meant it and wanted to chat and share life together. A true friend,a true gentleman, and always a pleasure to be around.
I remember him bringing grinders to all us lifeguards at Waterford beach. One time I even quietly followed behind him for an entire swim from Harkness rocks to the beginning of Ocean beach many years ago. Stayed about 10-20 yards behind him the entire time, unknown to him, and had not been in Waterford for a couple years. At the end, getting out of the water it took him less than 1 second to recognize me and give me a hug and welcome back to town greeting. We walked back chatting and catching up on life. He has a way of making everyone around him feel important.
Thank you to everyone that wrote here to share a memory. He will certainly be missed.

As so many have said, Lou Hage was a great teacher and inspirational person. He exuded an appreciation for life and those around him. This tribute, with the comments of so many who knew him and/or were lucky enough to have him as a teacher, is a continuation of the gift he gave us. Reading it (and thinking about him) reminds me of the warmth and passion he shared and the influence of his joy, optimism, and gratitude.

My recollection of what seemed to be the first class with Mr. Hage was him writing on the chalkboard "IF - little word, big meaning!" And then it began. Not much dictation of notes. Lots of discussion of the course of history.

Thank you Lou Hage.

So sorry to lose such a beloved friend. So enjoyed the years of knowing Lou & Nori while my daughters attended L-OL High School and continuing the friendship after that. I will always remember his glee when I would bring food into the classroom . It was such a joy to plan meals with him for events at school. So enjoyed making lasagna for him and Nori and helping them with maintaining their large house when they needed it. We were so glad that we were able to visit when we came up from FL and only regret that due to an unexpected family emergency we were unable to see him one last time this year. You will be missed but you are now with your beloved Nori.

Mr Hage was an inspiration to all who knew him. As a young teacher, I considered him a role model, as a colleague I always appreciated his support and wisdom. After a thirty year career I can sincerely say he was in that very small handful of truly life changing teachers I have known. I had not seen Lou for many years, after he retired and I left Old Lyme, but I was very fortunate to get a chance to speak with him fairly recently. It was so nice to see that after many years he still possessed the same vibrant, engaged and magnetic character. He will be missed by so many but , as others have noted, he will live on in ways both known and unknown for generations to come. Rest in peace Mr. Hage and thank you!

Dear Joe, Traci, John, Lydia, Sarah, Mark, Catherine, Reno, Lukas, Joelle, Isabelle, Giuliana, and Gabriela,

Our hearts go out to you. Mr. Hage (and Mrs. Hage) were such special friends to the Thall-Salsburg family. I have very fond memories of trying to ice skate in the Ocean Beach parking lot with Sarah and your parents, eating at your house, and always getting such a warm greeting at the far end of the beach. I last saw your Dad/Grandpa when he visited my Mom (friend from teenage years) after her recent surgery. As always, he was warm, kind and caring. His smile, consideration of others and thoughtfulness shines in all of you. Love,Liz, Jon, Rebecca and Zach

Mr. Hage was my 6th grade teacher - I believe his first year teaching in Old Lyme. I'll always remember him. The first time I met him I was playing in the structure of a new house being built in my neighborhood, and he happened to be wandering by. It was such an odd coincidence to meet my new teacher this way! His love of teaching and the students shone through every day. What a lovely memorial to a kind and loving man. My sorrow for your loss, and peace to your whole family.

A beautiful obituary to remember a beautiful man. Mr Hage is the person I think of when I hear the word "teacher". He encouraged us to learn, interact, think and push ourselves. Who assigns Russian novels to be read voluntarily over Christmas break and has the whole class step up to the task? Mr Hage does. He inspired us to work hard and think deeply. I am thankful for these lessons daily. Tears are streaming across the globe, in celebration of your life, Mr Hage. Thank you.

Mr. Hage was a wonderful man and teacher. He was a true gentleman, both in school, and sharing time with his family - especially at Christmas with the huge trees, and sitting down for Lebanese food. One of my funniest / humbling memories was going up to the front of the class to have a test returned by him after I had neglected to study. His "Is everything all right at home?" made me realize that he really WAS paying attention. And yes, everything was great at home - but that led to us realizing we were Lebanese and the family friendship was born. I am so grateful to have had him as a teacher, and then later as a friend, exchanging cards as time went on. Thank you for sharing your dad and grandfather (and your mom before that) with all of us.

So very sad that Lou has passed. He was a wonderful man who lived life to the fullest - traveling the world, entertaining family and friends, supporting numerous causes in his beloved New London - he was a gem of a man and left a mark wherever he went. Lou and Nori were extended family to the Esposito's, and I love this photo of them dancing at my wedding. Comforting to know Nori, Mondo and Merc are there to welcome him - I'm sure my dad has a glass of wine waiting! Loving thoughts are with Joe, John, Katherine, Sarah & their families - he loved his children and grandchildren more than anything.
