Elmer Taylor Obituary

Waterford - Elmer Taylor Jr., 87, passed away Nov. 9, 2023, at his home in Waterford. He was born April 12, 1936, in Little Rock, Ark., to parents, Elmer Taylor Sr. and Isabella Taylor. He grew up in their home with seven siblings in Kansas City, Mo.

Elmer was a charismatic man, loved by all and who never knew a stranger. He acted as Union steward during his career at General Dynamics Electric Boat and was a member of the Masonic Chapter and the Lions Club of New London. Elmer, known to many as Mr. Taylor or "Fudd," was truly one-of-a-kind, with a big personality and an even bigger heart. He dedicated all of his time to helping others, including mentoring for Big Brothers Big Sisters and volunteering at the New London Community Meal Center. His legacy lives on to the many whose lives he touched.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Taylor; his siblings, Ertha, Clarence, Dean and Loretta; his son James Epps Jr. and his wife Donna; his daughter Marcia Epps-Gillen and her husband Michael; his granddaughter Brandy Mitchell; and his grandchildren, Michael, Anthony and Alissa Malhoit. He is preceded in death by his brothers, Olee, Lewis and Shea Taylor; his wife Pauline Johnson Taylor; his son Tony Taylor; and his daughter Lisa Binion. He is also survived by his loving nieces, nephews and extended family.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, 60 Blackhall Street, New London. Burial will take place directly after the church service at Cedar Grove Cemetery. There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the New London Community Meal Center, 12 Montauk Avenue, New London, CT 06320. The Lester Gee Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

I'm so sorry to hear Elmer has passed. I loved working with him over the years, and always loved his garden behind our office, with his green beans growing on the neighbor's fence. I so admired his calm and easy way of being. He will be missed.

To all in the Taylor family,
Please accept my condolences. Living on Grabner Drive for many years, I would often see "Mr. Taylor" exiting his blue mustang or the brown Ford truck. I'd stop and ask how he and the family was doing, he'd just smile and give me a heads-up on everyone's goings-on, then ask how my Mom&Dad were. I will miss his smile and easy way and will keep him and the Taylor family in my prayers.

Dear Doris, Marcia, Jimmy & family. My sincere condolences on the loss of Elmer. Such a nice person & neighbor. My husband Joe liked going over & having talks with him, especially when he smelled those ribs being Barbecued. He sure could cook. May God bless him & May he rest in peace.

Sincerely, the Gomes Family.
