Erik Thunberg Obituary

Groton - Erik J. Thunberg, 36, originally from Mystic, passed away from an acute medical condition Friday, Oct. 27, 2023, at home. Born in New London Feb. 24, 1987, Erik was the son of Patricia Nugent of Uncasville, and Carl Thunberg of Mystic. He lived most of his life in Southeastern Connecticut and attended Groton public schools. He graduated from Fitch High School in 2005, and attended UConn where he majored in sociology.

From the time he could walk, Erik was constantly on the move. Having many friends and interests, there was little he wouldn't attempt. In addition to playing little league, basketball and running high school and college track, you could find him skateboarding, mountain biking, fishing, hiking, skiing, playing tennis, appreciating local buildings and just being outdoors. His love of adventure took him to places from Mexico to Canada, and various areas in between. All his life, he was known for his love of animals of all kinds, especially his "little buddy" Cyrus. While Erik had many interests, his proudest undertaking was track and field, both in high school and college, having amassed many personal honors and breaking school records in the 4x4 relay. All four years in high school, he qualified in the State decathlon placing second his senior year, which attracted UConn track officials. Recruited as a multi-eventer for the decathlon, Erik excelled as a freshman member of the UConn track team that ultimately won Big East honors in 2005.

Erik worked in hospitality most of his adult life and most recently as the bartender in The Cave at the Mt. Washington Resort in Bretton Woods, N.H. Tourists would gather as he entertained them recalling the historic details of the hotel and answering questions. On his days off during the winter months, you could find him skiing down one of the many slopes of the Presidential Range.

In addition to his parents, Erik is survived by his sister Pamela DeSimone (Sal) and their children, Emily and Liam of North Stonington; his uncle Robert Nugent (Carol) of Bozrah; his grandmother Frances Nugent (Bozrah); his wife Ashley Thunberg, Berlin, N.H.; and many other relatives.

His family will receive relatives and friends from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 4, at the Mystic Funeral Home located on Route 1 in Mystic. A service will immediately follow at noon at the funeral home. His burial will be held privately. Donations in Erik's memory may be made to any non-profit animal rescue organization.
