Eugene Goode Obituary
He was born in Montague, Mass., on Feb. 9, 1939. Eugene enlisted in the U.S. Navy in August of 1956, and was promoted through the enlisted ranks to the grade of chief electrician's mate. In January of 1966, he was appointed as a warrant electrician and in July of 1969, was commissioned as an ensign in the Limited Duty Officer Program.
Lieutenant Commander Goode's sea duty includes tours in USS Pickerel (SS 524), USS Bream (SSK 243), USS Dogfish (SS 350), USS Howard W. Gilmore (AS 16), USS Chopper (SS 342), USS Amberjack (SS 522), USS Cutlass (SS 478), and on board RCS Hai Shih (SS 91) as a member of Mobile Training Team subsequent to the turnover of USS Cutlass (SS 478) to the Republic of China. Other tours have included division engineer, Submarine Division 121, assistant material officer, Submarine Squadron 12, and as an instructor and legal officer at the Naval Submarine School New London.
Lt. Cmdr. Goode has been awaarded the Navy Commendation Medal (third award), Navy Achievement Medal, Battle Efficiency Award, Enlisted Good Conduct Medal, Navy Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. He was qualified in submarines, both officer and enlisted.
On Feb. 11, 1969, the USS Chopper, a diesel/electric submarine, was off the coast of Cuba when the power tripped off. Within seconds, the Chopper's angle increased to 450 down and begin to fall deeper into the ocean from 440 to an estimated 1,000 feet, near crush depth for this sub built in 1945. The efforts of the electrical gang, including that of Warrant Officer Eugene F. Goode, who also served as an electrician on the same submarine a decade earlier, helped save many from certain death, miraculously restoring power allowing the Chopper to ascend vertically out of the water straight towards the heavens before splashing down, severely damaged, back on top of the sea.
Once again, now retired "Gene" Goode on Feb. 2, 2013, ascended to the heavens, this time never to return. You served our country well, Dad, rest in peace.
Gene is reunited with his mother, Margaret, his father, Edward, and daughter, Karen.
He is survived by two brothers and a sister; his former wife, Edna; four children, Theresa, Patricia, Stephen, David; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, in Groton.

I didn't know Gene personally but he is my 'Submarine Brother'. I appreciate his service, his rising through the ranks as he did and most of all his heroics to save his sub and crew.He is what all submariners aspire to be....

Gene and I qualified on Bream in 1958. He and Edna lived in the same apartment building in Honolulu as my wife and I for a few months between West Pac runs.
He was a good sailor and great shipmate. Rest in peace brother. We have the watch.

I knew Gene quite well while serving on the Dogfish and I am so very sorry to hear of this. Memories of working on his VW Type 3, dinner at his home and his help in getting permission to have my 14 year old brother on one of our excercises are remembered often.
My heartfelt condolences to the family of this true American.
I'll be seeing Gene at some point and will pass on the good words written for him.
