Frederick Davies Obituary

Ledyard - Frederick W. "Fred" Davies Jr., 79, of Ledyard, a Navy veteran, sailed on to his Heavenly Father's Kingdom unexpectedly Oct. 27, 2021. Fred journeyed from his hometown of Youngstown, Ohio, to the U.S. Naval Base in Groton, to grace the submarine world with his gifts and talents as an electronics technician, always calm and alert. He became a "plank-owner" aboard the USSN Sturgeon, a stealth boat, first of the 637 Class. In his undersea adventures with his fellow crewmembers, he shared the experience of navigating beneath the North Pole.

Fred, as he was known to all, leaves his treasured wife, Beverly Ann Barlow Davies, a native of Old Lyme. Upon meeting her, Fred would have it no other; they were married in 1970, and made their lakeside home in Ledyard, sharing 51 years of partnership. Their loving care for each other and their extended families were a joy.

Fred is also survived by their son, his namesake and blessing whom he loved deeply and dearly, Frederick W. Davies III, and his partner Erica Brodeur, of Plainfield; two grandchildren of the Mashantucket Pequot Nation, Frederick M. Davies, Ledyard, and Breanna Ward, and her husband, Jeff of Maysville, N.C.; and five great-grandchildren, with one more due. In addition, he leaves behind his Ohio and Connecticut families: sisters, Sally Davies Jones and her husband, Jim of Poland, and Sue Davies Maloney of Youngstown; and brother Jim Davies of Chandler, Ariz.; sisters-in-law, Bonnie Barlow Cerruti, Ivoryton, Helen Barlow Slocum, Holland, N.Y., and the Rev. Nina Barlow Schmid, South Windsor; and brother-in-law Joseph L. Barlow Jr. and his wife Linda of Old Saybrook; ten nieces and nephews; and a blessedly continuing stream of great-nieces and nephews from all points east and west.

Fred revelled in all the joys of outdoor life and nature, especially sailing and fishing, with family gathered around him. His proficiency in electronics technology led him to several careers, where he contributed his expertise to General Dynamics/Electric Boat, Unisys and, in retirement, Foxwoods Casino. His daily computer correspondence with friends, family and colleagues, along with assisting with computer repairs, provided him opportunity to pursue that favorite pastime.

He was a dedicated, kind and loyal person of few words, with deep wells of wisdom, which he drew upon and shared throughout his life when needed, especially during these days of disturbing unrest. Fred modeled the Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you," throughout his life, ever-present in his quiet strength.

Family and friends are invited to gather at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, at Duck River Cemetery, Old Lyme, for a graveside celebration of Fred's loving life. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Wounded Warriors Foundation are welcome. For further information or to leave a remembrance, go to: www.fultontherouxoldlyme.com.
