George Crane Obituary

Chester - George Daniel Crane, 82, departed this life on March 27, 2009.

He was born in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, N.Y., on March 5, 1927, to the late James and Selma (Johanssen) Crane.

Mr. Crane was an army veteran of World War II. After his service, he worked briefly in television and radio, and opened a restaurant, before becoming a certified kitchen designer. He resided in Old Saybrook and Essex before moving to Chester 25 years ago. He owned and operated the Paul Dolan Company in Old Lyme (formerly of Essex) for 50 years. He loved his work, but was happiest when spending time with his family. He was a kind and gentle man who could always find the humor in any situation. He will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Andree (Benway); his son, George J. Crane of Colchester and his daughter and son-in-law, Cheri-Ann and Thomas J. Perry of Deep River. He also leaves his sisters, Marion Underhill of Westport and Helen Brown of Green Valley, Ariz.; his wife's sister and her husband, Elaine and Donald Selby of Old Lyme; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sisters, Lillian Dosch of Ridgefield and Ethel Crane of Old Saybrook.

His family is deeply grateful to the compassionate caregivers of Weiss Hospice Unit at Middlesex Hospital.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the unit would be greatly appreciated. There are no calling hours; a private service will be at the convenience of the family.
