She was born in Gloucester, Mass., on Oct. 18, 1928, the daughter of Victor and Virginia Downes Rivera.
Gloria was married to John C. Walsh on Oct. 25, 1969; he died Dec. 2, 1995. She was predeceased by her former husband, John H. Avery.
Gloria is survived two daughters, Marylyn Pinckert, of Spring Hill, Fla., and Barbara Moore, of Groton; and four sons, John Avery, of Groton, Michael Avery, of New London, William Avery, of Uncasville, and Daniel Avery, of Quaker Hill. Gloria is also survived by a sister, Diane Stedman, of Westerly, R.I., as well as 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be on Friday, July 1 from 6 until 8 o'clock at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday morning, July 2, 2005 at St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church, Groton Long Point Road, Groton at 10 o'clock. Private interment will be in the Connecticut State Veterans Cemetery, Middletown.
