He was born on Dec. 16, 1937, to the late Harold F. Smith Sr., and Alice (Kiely) Smith of Waterbury. Toby was a U.S. Navy veteran and worked in New London as a lineman for the telephone company. He then lived in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for 40 years, retiring as a police officer and spent his last two years in Port St. Lucie.
He is survived by his son, Steven M. Smith, and his daughter, Lydia B. (Smith) Brown; his former wife, Margaret Smith Baty; four stepchildren, Julie Manascolco, and Kenneth, Robert, and Richard Brown; 9 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild, all of Fort Lauderdale.
Memorial service is private for the family.
