Herbert Mandel Obituary

Lenox, Mass. - Capt. Herbert Irving Mandel, U.S. Navy (retired), passed away on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016, at Kimball Farms, a life care community in Lenox, Mass., where he resided since 2001.

Born on June 14, 1917, he was the eldest of three children of Jacob J. and Frieda (Silber) Mandel. He attended James Madison High School in Brooklyn, where he received a Congressional Appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. His first duty assignments were to the aircraft carriers Lexington and Wasp. In 1941, he entered the submarine school in Groton. He served on the submarines R13, Finback, Croaker, and as commanding officer of the USS Permit and Medregal. For his service in World War II, he was awarded a second Gold Star in lieu of his third Silver Star medal. After extensive service and education, he requested voluntary retirement in 1961.

Herb lived in New London for 40 years. Involved in the business community until he was 80, he first joined Electric Boat and later maintained an active role with Advest, a stockbrokerage firm. He was twice elected to the New London City Council, served as president of Congregation Beth El and president of the Conn. Chapter of the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association. In 1995, Herb was privileged to be master of ceremonies for the Wall Of Honor Dedication at the National Submarine Memorial East in Groton. In 2005, he authored the book, "Submarine Captain and Command at Sea."

He was married to Gloria Kaufman from 1941 until her death in 1962. In 1963, he married Mrs. Ann Richman. In 2001, after the death of his second wife, he moved to Kimball Farms and wintered in Florida.

Herb is survived by his son, Matthew Mandel, M.D., of Stockbridge, Mass., and his wife, Catherine; his stepsons, Stephen Richman, M.D., of Groton and David Richman of New London; two grandchildren, Laure (Mandel) Friedman of Wilton and Gregory Mandel of Los Angeles, Calif.; their spouses, David Friedman and Kristen Mandel; and four great-grandchildren, Aaron and Lia Friedman and Juliette and Vivienne Mandel.

Herb left all of those whose lives he touched with indelible memories of his loyalty, integrity, and devotion to family, friends, and the country he loved and served.

He will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors in April.

Matt and Mandel family,
I am reading your father's book for the third time and want to express my sympathy as I only heard of his passing recently.
I first met Herb 12 years ago, when he and Rose would come to services at Temple Shalom in Naples. I instantly recognized what a quality/accomplished person he was. Despite the differences in our ages, I enjoyed many conversations with him at the Oneg about his Navy experience and life in general.
And of course my copy of his book is autographed.
What an amazing man - What a Mensch! You must be very proud.
Regards,
Kal Faye, Naples FL

To the Mandel family,
I knew Herb through Beth El Synagogue and he was always very nice to my family and me. I was so excited when he autographed his book; which I proudly display on the top shelf of my bookcase. May his memory be for a blessing.

To the Family of Capt. Herb Mandell

When the Capt. lived in new London I was his gardener for the time he was there. With no exaggerations he was the kindest man I have ever met. Truth be known with 6 children he kept our family afloat in challenging times. he always had a good word for me and when I brought the kids to help me he and his wife were so very kind. When you meet someone like the Capt. it changes you because you see how a man could and should be. I have tried to emulate him in my day to day, the way I treat others and if I can help someone less fortunate. I know that I wasn't a part or a witness to his amazing military career. I only knew the man and its true that I loved him like a father and will never forget him
