Born in Bridgeport, she was the daughter of the late John and Gladys (Murray) Fahey.
Mrs. Campbell received a degree in psychology in 1947 from the University of Vermont. While there, she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, the Council-at-Large, served as campus manager, the news editor for the "Cynic", the Ariel office manager, and the Fall Play manager. She participated in many sports and numerous other activities as well.
Irene received her master's degree in teaching from Willimantic State College and began her teaching career in the Stonington school system. In 1966 she was employed by Pine Point School and in 1977 was appointed director of the Lower School. Irene later served as assistant head master of the school until her retirement in 1989, and continued to support the school as a member of its Board of Trustees. The "Campbell" building on the school campus is named in her honor for her years of dedication and innovation on behalf of Pine Point School, its faculty, and students.
Mrs. Campbell was also a member of ADK, served on the Stonington Youth Services Board, was a volunteer at The Westerly Hospital, and participated in many other community activities for the town of Stonington.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John and Ann Campbell of Westerly and a daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Stace Gordon of Newport, Ore.; three grandchildren, JoAnn E. Campbell and Mark D. Campbell, both of Boston, and Michael J. Campbell of Westerly. She is also survived by a sister, Teresa Melli of Bridgeport and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 25, at the Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1, Mystic. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Mary's Church, Main St., Stonington, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 26, followed by burial at Stonington Cemetery. There will be no procession from the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Irene's memory to Pine Point School, 89 Barnes Road, Stonington CT 06378.
