Jacqueline Dimmock Obituary

Syracuse, N.Y. - Jacqueline Anne Dimmock, 50, of Syracuse, died on Friday morning, April 7, 2017, surrounded by those who loved her, at the home of her parents in Colchester, after a prolonged illness.

Jackie, as she was known to all, grew up in Colchester, and attended school there until she went to St. Bernard High School in Uncasville, where she excelled academically, participating in both cross country and theatre. After high school, Jackie attended UConn for a year before transferring to and later graduating from Connecticut College in New London, with a degree in psychology. After college, Jackie worked in the psychology field in Boston for several years before she decided to pursue her doctorate in clinical psychology at the University of Virginia. After UVA, Jackie moved to Rochester, N.Y. and later settled in Syracuse, where she has lived for the last 20 years.

During that time, she was a member of the faculty of SUNY-Upstate, a medical and research university located in Syracuse. Throughout her life, Jackie pursued many passions, including table tennis and water sports, but her biggest was her involvement with Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Her relationship with her little sister, Renee, as well as with Renee's sister, Christina, and the rest of her family, brought special joy to Jackie. Another of Jackie's passions was the UConn basketball team, especially the UConn women. Whenever a game was on, she could be found reading all available information about it, and sharing observations with her father and sister on the phone. An avid twitter follower of all of the players, Jackie knew more about the team than even the most fervent of fans.

Jackie is survived by her parents, Julia and Edward Dimmock of Colchester; her sister, Susan Dimmock of Rocky Hill and her sister, Julie Dimmock and brother-in-law, Bill Gagnon, of Burlington, Vt.

Funeral services will be at the Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home, 167 Old Hartford Road, Colchester, on Tuesday, April 11, 2017. Visiting hours will be from 3 to 5:30 p.m., with a vigil service immediately following. The burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 12, at East Neck Cemetery, 154 Niles Hill Road, Waterford.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Onondaga County (New York).

My condolences to the entire family. I trained with Jackie in Syracuse and had stayed in touch with her every so often. I was wondering about not hearing from her in a while and a common informed me about what had happened.
I enjoyed seeing her and catching up with what was going on in our lives and hearing her talk passionately about Big Brother/Bid Sister program that meant so much to her.
I will truly miss her, she was a kind person.

To the entire Dimmock Family, I was so sorry to hear about Jackie.
Ahmad Davis called and told me, I have thought fondly of Jackie and Sue throughout the years.I always loved Jackies sense of humor and quick wit, with the great timing of her good natured sarcasm. The summer we all hung out together was what i consider the best summer of my life.Your wonderful family made it truly memorable,From breaking walls to swimming at the quarry.
I hope the memories we all share of Jackie, as such a special person will help.

Dear Julie, Ed, Susan, and Julie,

My memories of Jackie go way, way back to Halls Hill School---where I taught all the girls. From comments I remember at a parent/teacher conference, Jackie---an excellent student---was apparently quieter in class than at home where she must have held her own as the middle child.

I was so sorry to hear of her passing. May you all find solace in your memories of her.

With sympathy for your loss,

Jackie was a great friend. She always took the time to listen. She loved coming over for cookouts. We would often sit by her pool in the summer and talk about life. She was a mentor, "big sister" and took her role seriously. Jackie will be missed!! R.I.P.

Jackie and I met at NTI during my Undergrad years. I remember her as a beautiful light who was open to all she encountered in New London - new people, new surroundings, new studies, new ideas . . . I can imagine she grew into a beautiful adult. Her death comes as a shock to me and I'm sorry to say I didn't keep in contact with her over the years. However, as a breast cancer survivor myself, I can only offer my sincere condolences to her friends and family at this very sad time. I'm sure her legacy and continued spirit will carry those closest to her for years to come.
