James Arpin Obituary

Lisbon - It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of James "Jim" Arpin Jan. 31, 2024. Born Oct. 1, 1958, in Norwich, Jim was the son of the late Ernest and Josephine (Kustesky) Arpin.

The youngest of four children, Jim was raised in Taftville and Lisbon, and he graduated from Norwich Technical High School in 1976. After graduation, Jim worked as an inside machinist at Electric Boat for over ten years and later at the U.S. Postal Service before becoming a successful business owner. Jim owned and managed Arpin's Discount Liquors in New London for many years before selling the business to spend more time with his family. For the past two decades, he owned and operated A&A Landscaping Services, serving Norwich and several surrounding towns. His work ethic and willingness to help anyone was admired by those who knew him, and these values were instilled in his children. In his free time, Jim found joy in exploring flea markets and house sales with his beloved wife, Toby, as well as attending modified races. Jim also had a passion for classic cars, particularly the '57 Chevy, which showcased his deep appreciation for automotive history. Jim's fascination with automobiles extended into the realm of slot cars, a hobby he began nurturing at the age of seven. Over the years, his collection burgeoned, each piece a testament to his lifelong enthusiasm for craftsmanship.

Above all, Jim was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, giving his entire heart to his family. The love he had for his family was unconditional, immeasurable, and not a day went by when his love could not be felt. He leaves behind the love of his life, his wife of 42 years, Toby; and his five children: Kelsey (Daniel), Cassandra (Jacob), Rebecca (Marquis), Christopher and Skyler; and one grandchild, Andrew. Jim is also survived by his brothers, Ernest (Beverly) and Robert; as well as his brother-in-law James. He was predeceased by his parents; and sister, Jacqueline.

Honoring Jim's wishes, services will be private and at the discretion of the family.

Dad, it´s hard to believe that it´s almost been a year already since your passing. I remember getting the dreadful call like it was yesterday.
Within the year, your second grandson was born - Cameron James. Andrew adores him and as I tell Mom I can see you and Aunt Jackie in some of his facial features. Andrew has taken on your love of cars and tractors. Nothing fascinates this kid more than seeing a tractor and immediately needing to get up on it and turn the steering wheel. His favorite movie is the Disney movie Cars which I know you enjoyed watching too. I hope you are looking down smiling at us all and we miss you everyday.

Dad,
I miss you more every day. The races at Stafford aren´t the same without you this year. Words can´t even describe how good of a father you were to all of us. You were always there to listen and offer words of wisdom. You truly were one of a kind. I love you always.

So sad that we have lost our brother-in-law Jim. Living away from Connecticut we didn´t get to visit as much as we should have. I will remember him as a Gentle Giant with the cutest twinkle in his eyes. He will live on in his wonderful family. Toby, you were both blessed.

I'm deeply saddened by the loss of my youngest brother ,Jim.His passing came suddenly and unexpectedly.I had seen him shortly before the awful news came to me.At the time he shared a short video of his grandson,as he now became a grandfather, and was proud of it.Jim was proud of all of his children, and their accomplishments in life. Now the family has expanded, adding sons-in-law and that wonderful baby boy.Jim and Toby were both successful in business and life itself because they were a team with conviction and drive.More so than many of us.That very last time I saw Jim,he related he had just helped someone do a task that person couldn't handle (free of charge). He said it made him feel good to do such things.I know what it means because he had done the same for me (and wouldn't accept payment) over the course of many years, and I'm grateful for it.As the older brother,I remember when he came into our lives as a newborn baby. Now the decades have slipped by,and suddenly he's gone too soon.R.I.P. Jim.I miss you,and will remember you always.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jim and Toby through their 5 wonderful children. I had the rare opportunity of having each in my driver education class. i remember as i met each one of children i would say to myself wow what a wonderful kid this is, Kelsey, then Cassie, next Rebecca, Chris and finally Skylar each left a lasting impression on me. All through these years i came to find out why because of the parents Jim and Toby. Jim, you have left your mark here in these 5 young people as your legacy. RIP Jim they now have you and the memories and values you instilled in them to carry on.
