James Gibbs Obituary

Mystic - James "Jim" Gibbs, architect, of Mystic, passed Feb. 22, 2022, after a long illness. Son of Julian and Cora Lee Gibbs, his colorful childhood wended through Princeton, N.J., England, and Barrington, R.I. Jim studied at the Mt. Hermon School, Ecole International de Geneve, Brown University and the University of British Columbia. His study of finer things and well-healed acquaintances informed his life, including a dear friend from Geneva, a Woodstock Festival organizer, who brought Jim to that seminal experience.

He was an accomplished architect specializing in historic renovation and contributing to many communities locally and on the West Coast. After Brown, Jim surveyed architecturally diverse communities for the Rhode Island Historical Resources Commission. He worked for the famed Frank Gehry Associates in LA, and Z.G.F. Associates, Portland, Oregon, finally settling in Mystic, where he wrote historical surveys for the towns of Groton, Westport, and Stafford Springs. He also designed for Cox Architects of Glastonbury, Daroff Design Inc. in Philadelphia, DBVW Associates in Providence, and the Newport Collaborative; and in 2009, launched his own firm in Mystic.

Jim's passion and gift for sailing were legendary. He was an original member of the Essex Corinthian Yacht Club, and member of the Ram Island and Masons Island Yacht Clubs, and The Corinthians, where he excelled at yachting exploits on his Evelyn 32, and commensurate merrymaking.

Jim's love of history and passion for family genealogy led him to regale all with notable names and dates going back generations, often bragging of a direct lineage to King Charlemagne. He was possessed of an agile mind and a keen wit. He was so proud of his family, especially his son Adam.

Jim is survived by Pamela Cramer Gibbs of Mystic; son Adam Gibbs of Amherst, Md.; sister Judith Shaw (Bruce) of Providence, R.I.; and brothers, Jeffrey Gibbs of West Greenwich, R.I., and Jonathan (Cindy) Gibbs of Old Saybrook; and several nieces and nephews.

Burial will be private. A Celebration of Life will be held this summer, to be announced later. Arrangements are by Mystic Funeral Home.

Dear Pam and Adam,
Please know I'm thinking of you and sending my most sincere condolences on the passing of your beloved Jim.
I remember Jim and Adam always coming into Zack's for calamari right before or after karate (?). Adam just loved it! Jim loved him and was always so proud of him!
I hope many happy memories will see you through this difficult time.
