Janet Barnett Obituary

Ledyard - Janet Holdridge Barnett, 90, a life-long resident of Ledyard, died peacefully in her home Sept. 18, 2024. Janet was born March 14, 1934, in Norwich, to Paul O. Holdridge Sr. and Mildred Manning Holdridge.

To Janet, life was beautiful. Whether at Long Pond, a 4-H meeting, or around a kitchen table, her true gift was her ability to bring people together. Those who entered Janet's many circles were welcomed with compassion and curiosity, and often went away feeling truly seen and empowered. Growing up in Ledyard, she attended the Geer Hill School, a one-room schoolhouse where, as an eighth grader, she helped teach younger students to read. She attended high school at Norwich Free Academy (NFA), and then went to UConn, earning a degree in education and forming life-long friendships. While at UConn, she met Frederick "Phil" Barnett; and they were married soon after graduation June 19, 1955. They moved to Virginia, while Phil served his country as a U.S. Marine Corps lieutenant, and moved back to Ledyard in late 1957, where she has lived ever since.

Janet and Phil had six children: David, Cathie, Jack, Larry, Bobby and Mark; and raised them in a loving home full of fun, family and friends, and tradition. They took numerous cross-country camping trips in a station wagon packed with kids, and spent lots of time outdoors, hiking, canoeing, swimming, skating, sledding and appreciating nature. While raising her family, Janet returned to school to earn her master's degree before embarking on a 27-year career at NFA teaching child development and family sociology. She founded and directed the NFA Child Care Center and GRADS (Graduation, Reality and Dual Role Skills) program, where she taught students how to foster health, happiness and curiosity in themselves and their children. Many of those students became part of her extended family, remaining in touch with Janet and sharing their accomplishments for decades.

Janet and Phil continued to travel together after retirement, visiting 22 countries and hiking in every continent except Antarctica. After Phil's passing in 2007, Janet continued to visit friends and family all over the country. At age 87, she joined her children on a trip to the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, and went scuba diving with three of her sons. In recent years, her nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren have been her "pride and joy" and "favorite companions." In Janet's words, "Together we explore the world around us, build skills and confidence and learn to love and care for one another."

Janet was active in 4-H for most of her life – as a member, summer worker, 4-H Fair officer, camp counselor, assistant County Agent, and a club leader over several generations. She truly lived her life following these words: "I pledge my HEAD to clearer thinking, my HEART to greater loyalty, my HANDS to larger service, and my HEALTH to better living for my club, my community, my country, and my world." A healthy lifestyle was always important, as she ate nutritiously and exercised regularly – meeting friends for a walk, swimming across Long Pond, and attending fitness classes. Janet was an active member of the Ledyard Congregational Church (LCC) her entire life. She was baptized, attended and taught Sunday school, and married there, and later served as Deacon and on the Missions, Women's Fellowship and many other committees. For many years she coordinated the Amistad program, helping multi-language students do their homework and realize their strengths. Janet taught all those involved the value of helping others through her spirit and actions. Many of those children continued to involve Janet in their own family traditions as adults, and several have become teachers themselves. Janet was passionate about helping the LCC extend its reach into the community, coordinating monthly potluck "community suppers," visiting elderly community members, and volunteering for other church events. Fittingly, Janet's 90th birthday was celebrated in the LCC Fellowship Hall, where over 100 members of her family and friends came together to share stories, skits, and laughter.

In early August, Janet was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. She continued to live her final weeks with amazing grace, a positive spirit and her trademark smile. Janet will be dearly missed by her children: David (and Eileen) of Boxborough, Mass., Catherine (and Kevin) of East Lyme, Lawrence (and Kim) of Moosup, Robert of Ledyard, and Mark (and Nichole) of Summerfield, Fla.; her nine grandchildren: Jake and Marie Barnett, Sara, Daniel and Mari Nazzaro, Michelle Bradley, Jenny Venanzi, Molly Harlow and Mason Barnett; her eleven great-grandchildren: Olivia, Audrey, Addison, Amelia, Oliver, Hannah, Hadley, Linden, Jack, Luca and Remi; and her sister Mary (and David) Foltz; and brother David (and Sara) Holdridge. She was predeceased by her husband Phil; her son Jack; and her brother Paul Holdridge Jr.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 4, at the Ledyard Congregational Church followed by a reception in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be private. Her family will greet relatives and friends for a continued celebration of Janet's amazing life from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Holdridge Pavilion in Ledyard Center, 740 Colonel Ledyard Hwy. Funeral arrangements are provided by Dinoto Funeral Home (www.dinotofuneral.com). In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Janet's memory to the Ledyard Congregational Church (www.ledyardcongregational.org and select "Janet Barnett Memorial Fund" or send check to LCC at 722 Colonel Ledyard Hwy. Please remember Janet by taking a walk in the woods or lending a helping hand to a friend or someone in need.

Dear David, Eileen, entire Barnett family and friends of Mrs. Barnett,
What a beautifully composed obituary; kudos to the author(s). Mrs. Barnett was my favorite teacher while being a student of NFA´s Class of 1973. When she spoke I listened very carefully to her words of wisdom. She is one of the main reasons I majored in English and studied on the Education track while in college, and when pursuing my MA. I will always remember Mrs. Barnett and am happy our paths crossed all those years ago on NFA´s breathtaking campus.
Fondly, Jolene (Beauregard) Ruffo

Mrs. Barnett I will always love and cherish you and your memory. If not for you and the GRADS program IDK where I would've been or how I would've ever been and to be a good mother to Deanna. Thank you for all the love and laughter and many years you gave us. And for never judging us being young, teen parents. You can rest peacefully knowing your work here is done. Love you.

Larry, Bob, Val, Molly & Mason along with the whole Barnett family:
Please accept our deepest condolences on your loss. I would occasionally run into Mrs. Barnett when she visited next door when Val and the kids were our neighbors. After that at Village Market or Holdridge's. We would always have a pleasant conversation and catch up on those we knew in common especially family. She was always so happy. We hope you find comfort in knowing she had such an extraordinary life.

It is hard to find the best words to share my respect, appreciation, gratitude, and love, for my dear friend and former coworker. Janet had a way of expecting and finding the best in you, whether you believed it or not! She encouraged me in more ways than she ever knew, and served as a role model as an early childhood advocate, teacher, mentor, parent, grandparent, and friend. Janet, you have blessed so many lives! I am privileged to be one of them. Godspeed, my dear friend. You will be missed. I will work to honor all of those things you exemplified in your life, every day.

When my dear cousin Eileen said that she was dating a fun classmate named David Barnett, we were happy to welcome him into our Italian Clan. That was over 50 years ago. We watched the Barnett family flourish, excel and grow over the years, with mother Janet at the helm. She orchestrated so many family events, all exciting and educational. Many in Ledyard, but many around the New England area and around the world.
And when I got assigned to Mrs. Barnett´s Sociology Class at the Norwich Free Academy, I was in awe of her talents and compassion as an educator. Everyone loved her kindness and her love of learning. I was inspired to enter the education field as well, and enjoyed 35 years in the Canterbury Schools as a teacher. Certain people are role models and leave an impression. And that was Janet....Mrs. Barnett with her quiet smile and fair expectations.
We must celebrate Janet. On behalf of the Norwich Free Academy Class of 1973 we thank you. We all thank you as an educator and also as a mother/grandmother/great grandmother who showed great pride in her blooming family tree. Janet, may you rest in peace forever.

Janet was an incredible woman with a lifetime of impacting so many others. I have countless memories of my time with Janet. As close family friends she treated us all as part of her family and her smile and welcoming nature made everyone feel as if they belonged and had their own unique value to give to the world. Growing up I was in her 4H troop for many years. She was the most patient leader and taught me so much from cooking, sewing, public speaking, volunteering and basically how to be a good human. She reminded me to be patient and kind always and to take a break and try again when I became frustrated. She instilled belief and confidence in our entire troop and we sure had fun doing it. As a child she taught me to swim across Long Pond with a plan and calm support until I could do it alone and then she would watch us from the shore with her glowing smile or join us on our adventures across the pond. As an adult I´ve moved 3,000 miles away and yet many summers when I´ve been back to visit I´ve been able to see her and bring my own kids to experience some of my same memories from growing up and soak in a piece of her great advice. I am thankful I saw her and snapped this photo of us in July. I will hold on to my memories and the lessons she taught me and remember her fondly. To the entire Barnett family, thank you for sharing your incredible Janet with me, sending each of you a hug.

I spoke on the phone with her daughter to handle an affair for Janet and she told me how incredible her mother was and to check out the obituary today if I had some time. I'm glad I did because it warmed my heart to see how full of life and love this woman was. I'm glad I got to learn a little bit about such a special woman and my condolences to all who loved her.

`Mrs. B´- a woman Who influenced my entire life. I met Mrs. B in 1986 as a freshman at NFA the love for children I had and her knowledge and experience an early childhood instantly created a bond between the two of us in the spring of my third year, Mrs. B saw the need for childcare for girls who have gotten pregnant and we´re not able to graduate high school through much research. Hard work dedication and her passion for good. Janet wrote and was awarded a grant to start the GRADS program at NFA. Not only did it include a childcare center on site to provide care for the child on mom attended classes. It also provided transportation to and from school and doctors appointments along with the support staff of social workers and school psychologist and along with Mrs. B. Mrs. B provided education on dual roles as a parent and a student. She also assisted in having a successful transition after high school and into the workforce. The childcare center would continue caring for those children and accepted minimal payment to do so. Janet fed many many obstacles and challenges but she did not give up ever. I am proud to say I was a major part of this process with her as I started my senior year. We opened the childcare center at NFA after I graduated high school I had a good fortune to return and start working in the childcare center as an employee for NFA I was 18 years old in my life was changed forever. Janet encouraged me to move through early childhood as I had a special gift. I remaining contact with her through all of these years. I know that everything I have accomplished through my career , all the good good things I have done has been upon the inspiration of her. I love you Mrs. B and you´ll never be forgotten.

Janet was a gift to all of us who knew her and loved her. I have told her more than once that she was a angel, sent to us as an example of what true kindness is all about. I don't think I ever laughed as hard in my life as in those days when I was in her 4-H club. Her love of life was infectious. She inspired me and shared her advice about the world that I have held with me always. I could never thank her enough for helping out our family when we were trying to keep my Mom in her home when she was older. She was a true gem and it was an honor to know her and be her friend. My sincere condolences to the family.

Janet and I became friends through the Ledyard Walkers. When we found out we shared a birthday (though many years apart) we celebrated every year with our friends from the walking group. We joked that we were "twins". She was such a wonderful person and role model and will be missed by everyone who knew her. RIP sweet Janet.

I have many fond memories of Janet through Ledyard Walkers . Janet was always willing to share and had the gift of hospitality, opening her home in Ledyard for teas and Christmas parties, picnics at the cottage (even after moving) and helping with and organizing many of the annual picnics. She shared a lot of her knowledge of nature and was a beautiful person with a beautiful smile.
