Jeannette Shields Obituary

McLean, Va. - Jeannette (Gagnon) Shields, 99, widow of the late Vice Admiral William D. "Doc" Shields, Coast Guard Academy Class of 1931, and former Vice Commandant of the Coast Guard, died on Oct. 5, 2010, in McLean, Va.

She was born May 2, 1911, in Waterbury, the daughter of the late John J. Gagnon and Melia (L'Heureux) Gagnon, grew up in New London, and graduated from Williams Memorial Institute in 1928. She was one of the Coast Guard Academy's largest benefactors and was awarded the Coast Guard Academy Alumni Association's Distinguished Service Medal and the Coast Guard's Distinguished Public Service Award.

She was also a licensed American Kennel Club judge for the Sporting Group and Best in Show.

Mrs. Shields was predeceased by her four brothers and two sisters.

She will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery on Jan. 24, 2011.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Vinson Hall Assistance Fund, 6251 Old Dominion Drive, McLean VA 22101.
