Jeannine LaMothe Obituary

Groton - Jeannine T. (St. George) LaMothe, 92, of Poquonnock Road passed peacefully at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital Saturday, Sept. 2, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. Jeannine was born Sept. 4, 1930, in Taftville, the last of 13 children born to Joseph and Laura St. George, all of whom predeceased her and welcomed her home to heaven upon her passing. She was also joyfully reunited with her husband of 58 years, Charles G. Lamothe Sr. whom she married Sept. 5, 1949, and who predeceased her in 2008.

Jeannine was a dedicated and proud mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who is survived by four children: Charlene Lassinger (Gary) of Groton, George Lamothe (Andi) of Summerfield, Fla., Charles Lamothe Jr. (Trish) of Old Lyme, and Robert Lamothe (Amy) of East Lyme; nine grandchildren: Jeannine Ward (Chuck), Gary Lassinger (Meredith), Laura Ellal (Donnie), Katy Blevins Calabrese (Matt), Emily Lamothe (Simon), Tyler Lamothe, Phil Cohen, Bella Cohen, and Theo Lamothe; and 11 great-grandchildren, Halle, Hannah, Holden, Hayden, Gabe, Emily, Ben, Jake, Petey, Madison and Charlie. As one of 13 children, Jeannine also cherished close relationships with countless nieces, nephews and cousins by whom she will be dearly missed.

Jeannine was best known for her incredible talent as a powerful singer and gifted organist, having followed her passion for performing since childhood. Accompanied by the Paul Szenher Band, she was regularly featured at The Lighthouse Inn, as well as The Norwich Inn and the Connecticut Yankee. Her passion for music was also coupled with her heart for the service of others as she went on to produce multiple fundraising variety shows with her large and gifted family, The St. George Generations. Along with her sister, Lucille, who helped write and produce each show, Jeannine led The St. George Generations to perform for full-house crowds, raising thousands of dollars to build a church in Caracas, Venezuela, and funding several music scholarships and local charities including St. Bernard's High School. She served for 44 years as the organist, soloist, and choir director at Sacred Heart Church in Groton, performing thousands of funerals and weddings before her retirement at the age of 80. When she wasn't performing or caring for her family, if the sun was shining, Jeannine could always be found soaking it up in her favorite spot near the Zbierski House at Eastern Point Beach.

In the final weeks of Jeannine's life, she was cared for by many wonderful nurses and staff on Floor 5.4 at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to each of them as well as to Dr. Nimesh Patel and Dr. Valerie Popkin for their steadfast care and compassion.

Above all, Jeannine's life was one to be admired and learned from. She gave it everything she had - all of her love, all of her effort and all of her faith - even to her last moments. Her family invites you to Celebrate a Life well lived in a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, in Sacred Heart Church, 56 Sacred Heart Dr., Groton. Burial will be private.
