Joan Henley Obituary

Ledyard - Joan (Anderson) Henley, 79, of 13 Carriage Trail in Ledyard, passed away on Thursday, July 4, 2013, at her home.

She was born on April 30, 1934, in Savannah, Ga., the daughter of Gladys (Anderson) Fennell of Dorchester, Mass. and the late Marion Parker.

Mrs. Henley was married on May 15, 1957 to the late James A. Henley. He died on May 15, 1998. For over 19 years, Mrs. Henley had been employed in The Civil Service working at the U.S. Naval Base Galley in Groton.

Her survivors include three daughters, Janice Henley of Rutland, Mass., Elizabeth Anderson of Brockton, Mass., and Doreen Harris of Ledyard; daughter-in-law, Jennis Handy-Anderson of Brockton, Mass.; one sister, Marionette Fennell of Boston, Mass.; two brothers, Jerry Fennell of Dorchester, Mass. and Samuel Anderson of Mattapan, Mass.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

She had also been predeceased by her son, Melvin Henley; and two sisters, Maxine Fennell and Linda Clements.

Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday, July 9, at the Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London. There will be a visiting hour from 11 to noon prior to her service. Mrs. Henley's burial will follow in the Connecticut Veterans Cemetery in Middletown.

To My Cousins, Janice, Betty & Doreen,

I am so sorry to hear about Aunt Joan. I have many fond memories of her. I recently ran into Aunt Joan and told her how beautiful she looked. This was a shock for me! Let the Lord give the family peace and comfort during this trying time.

I cannot think of anyone else who has had a greater impact on the entire Navy. Ms. Joan provided hospitality for 19 years to every submariner that worked in our force. Her compassion and friendliness kept up the morale three meals a day. Ms. Joan faced challenges in the galley head-on, while still maintaining a cheerful disposition. Rest in peace Ms. Joan, our sailors will surely miss you tremendously.

To The Henley Family, I worked with Miss Joanie for 2yrs. I loved her. She was my Supervisor at the galley. She was a friend, advisor and confidant. She watched me grow. I meet my husband John at the galley . She and I had many conversations over the five yes that we were stationed in Bremerton Washington.She comforted me wh in my own mother passed. Now I condole with you. She will be very much missed.But we know that to be absent from the body is to be present with The Lord. She is resting from all of her labors., The Lord be with you all.

I had the pleasure of working alongside Ms. Henley while stationed in Groton. She was a kind and hard working woman. She will be greatly missed. May she rest in peace. My thoughts are with her friends and family!!!

Ms Joan, "Mom", I am still stunned that are gone. Thinking back to all the years that we knew each other and worked together I can't help but to smile. But it saddens me deeply that you are gone. You helped me refine me into the man that I am today and for that I will forever be grateful. I will miss our talks at lunch time and your forever common sense attitude about everything.
