Joanna Stewart Obituary

East Lyme - Joanna Stewart, affectionately known as "Joann," 86, of East Lyme, passed away peacefully at home July 30, 2024, surrounded by her beloved family. She was born July 9, 1938, in New London, the cherished daughter of Richard "Sal" Salamanca and Sarah Drago Salamanca. She is survived by the love of her life, her husband of 65 years, James Stewart; son James Stewart and his wife Samantha of Niantic; and daughter Diane Stewart of Waterford. She was predeceased by her son-in-law, Boran Cakin. She is also survived by several cousins and nephews.

She graduated from New London High School in 1956. After raising her children, she returned to work as a bookkeeper, retiring from Sears after 29 years. She was an active member of her high school reunion committee. When her children were younger, she was active in East Lyme schools as a regular room mother and chaperone. She enjoyed spending time at the beach with her family, traveling and walking on the Niantic Boardwalk. She also baked for generations of friends and neighborhood children. She will be remembered most for her uncontrollable laugh, delicious cookies, obsessive house-cleaning and sweet tooth.

The family would like to thank Hartford HealthCare at Home and especially Carly for putting a smile on Joann's face during her final weeks.

At Joann's request, there will not be calling hours or a memorial service. Donations in her memory may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. www.stjude.org.

My condolences to Joann´s family. I just became aware of her passing. I worked with Joann in the cashiers office at Sears in Waterford during the late 80´s up to 1990. She was always my favorite. If anything, she taught me not to take things in life too seriously and that has stayed with me to this day. Again I am so sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry to read of Joanne's death. We didn't see each other much after our kids were grown, even though our properties abutted at the rear. Neighborhood kids would cut through her yard on the way home from school! Before retiring, Jim was our plumber, and a good one. Time marches on; good memories will sustain. Warmly, Sue Guida

Sorry for your loss Jim. I never had the opportunity to meet your mom but it sounds like she had a full and happy life, and was a blessing to those who knew her. Who can ask for more?

My sympathy to the Stewart family. Joann and I were classmates as well as reunion committee members. A very fine lady.
