John Helsel Obituary

New London - John David Helsel, 93, passed peacefully in his sleep Monday, Sept. 18, 2023. Born in 1930, in Abington, Pa., to Chester and Carrie Helsel, he grew up the second youngest of four siblings on the family farm in Chalfont, Pa., where he raised goats and sold their milk in the surrounding area.

He entered the U.S. Navy in 1950, rose to the rank of Chief and enjoyed a long career sailing the world, with postings in Europe, and Asia. He ended his naval career in Groton, and spent several years after his retirement working in clinical research at Pfizer Pharmaceuticals.

During his long life, he never strayed far from his agricultural roots, always keeping a garden wherever possible and spending his later work life as a landscaper and horticulturist (Master Gardener, State of Connecticut). He was married to the late Virginia Helsel; and is survived by his daughter Cynthia Helsel Skier (from a previous marriage); stepchildren: Andrea Simmons, Jonathan Simmons and Mark Simmons; and step-grandchildren; and great-grandchildren, who knew and loved him as "Bapa."

Among his varied interests, John David was an avid singer and actor. He was a longtime member of the East Lyme Gilbert and Sullivan Players, where he frequently took lead male roles in shows including "Trial by Jury," "The Pirates of Penzance," "The Gondoliers," "H.M.S Pinafore," and "The Mikado." Additionally, he was a frequent soloist with choral and symphonic groups in the greater New London area, performing a wide variety of sacred works, including Handel's "Messiah," "The Creation" (Hayden), Bach Cantatas, and staged works, including "Amahl and the Night Visitors" (Menotti).

John David was a generous man who was ready to lend a hand to neighbor and stranger alike. Throughout his life, he often volunteered to offer support to young people who lacked the family support and opportunities he enjoyed. He always thought that he could make a difference where it was needed and, in this way, he touched many lives. He was a long-time, active member of the First Church Congregational in New London, where he was a faithful member of the choir and active in positions of leadership.

We will celebrate his life in a memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, at the First Church Congregational in New London. The family asks that all donations be made to the Nature Conservancy of Connecticut.

Bob and I send our heartfelt condolences to David's family. We attended the lovely memorial service and are sorry we were unable to greet you in person at the reception that followed.

I first met David and Virginia through the East Lyme Arts Council Chorus when we performed together in Gilbert and Sullivan operettas almost 40 years ago. Bob and I got to know them as friends when we later moved across the street from the Helsels on Gallup Lane in Waterford. David and I would often meet in the street while retrieving our mail and would have long conversations about gardening which resulted in tours of his yard, lessons on pruning, blueberry picking, comparisons of our backyard bluebird sightings, and sharing of recipes. David was very generous with his produce and all of his neighbors benefited! I would often get a call from him asking, "Are you receiving blueberries today?" or whatever else was in season. He grew everything including paw-paws!! When David retired we snatched him up to help us get our yard under control. Once a week David would putter across the street with his tractor to dig gardens, build stone walls, prune, or install his special tomato plants. There was nothing that man couldn't or wouldn't do!

David, Virginia and I were longtime members of the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Chorus, and it became a tradition over the years for the four of us to meet at each other's houses for wine and hors d'oeuvres after our concerts. The two husbands took turns choosing the wines and the two wives made the food. Virginia's Membrillo with Manchego cheese and crackers was always a hit!

David was generous with his time, his advice, and his friendship. After Virginia passed away, he continued to share his bounty, whether with produce from his garden, his home, the time share at the Trapp Family Lodge, or his Goodspeed tickets. He was a very special man who touched so many people. We think of him often and are grateful to have been able to call him a friend.

David and Virginia were genuinely friendly and welcoming when we came to church. They made choir a pleasure. They led by example. David was open about his life and humble about God´s place in it.
Here are 2 pictures from First Congregational Church in New London´s 350th Anniversary and from an annual summer fair in 1992.

He was very helpful to us when we started a landscaping business and he had great knowledge regarding both horticulture and dealing with customers. We are reminded of the saying "You need a little bit of Horticultural knowledge for the plants and a lot of Psychology for the people when starting a landscape business." He was great at both.
