John Hickey Obituary

New London - John Vincent Donald Hickey, 47, formerly of New London and Mystic, died suddenly on April 9, 2011, in Waterford.

He was born in New London on Aug 11, 1963. He graduated from New London High School, class of 1981 and was a ship fitter journeyman. John loved fishing, the Red Sox, 1970 Cougar muscle cars, and Cocker Spaniels. He owned numerous cockers during his life and leaves behind his faithful dog, "Lucky".

As a teenager, John was credited with saving a driver from being crushed by the bed of his dump truck and was featured in an article in The Day on March 2, 1978.

He worked for many years in the fiber optic industry for ATT and Lucent and led a team responsible for restoring communication at ground zero following the World Trade Center collapse. The effects of dust inhalation at ground zero contributed to a rapid decline in his health.

He is survived by his sister, Susan Hickey Melville and nephews, Ryan Melville and Christopher Melville, all of Woodstock; several cousins in New Jersey, New York, and Maryland; and numerous friends in the New London area.

John was predeceased by his infant son, Donald Patrick Hickey; his parents, Robert Joseph Hickey and Veronica Dalton Hickey; and his brother, Robert J.M. Hickey.

John requested cremation, and his ashes be scattered at his favorite fishing spot. The Impellitteri-Malia Funeral Home is assisting the family with a private service that will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Waterford-East Lyme Animal Control Shelter or another no-kill shelter of choice.

I wanted to express my deepest sympathy for those remembering John at this time. I was a friend of his in my early twenties. He was so easy going and a joy to be around. May he rest in peace.

Miss you much.

Thank you all for your messages. I married and moved out of New London when John was 14; and he moved so much that I know little of his adult life. There will be a short service today, Friday 4/15/11 at 1 pm at the Hickey plot in Elm Grove Cemetary, Mystic, CT. I know this is short notice; all his friends are invited.
