John Stedman Obituary

Mystic - John Stedman, 76, lifelong resident of Stonington, passed away peacefully March 15, 2023, surrounded by his family. He leaves behind his partner Debbie Lester, with whom he shared 26 joyful years. He also leaves his children: Meredith (Robert) Sundman of Pawcatuck, Lindsay (Nate) Williams of Gales Ferry, Niki Stedman of Las Cruces, N.M., and Holly (Drew) Lester of Niantic. He also leaves grandchildren: Anna, William, Jane, Avery and Sage.

John was a master carpenter and craftsman with an eye for perfection. He was sought after and well-known for the high level of artistry and perfection he brought to every job. He lived by the words, "The most effective way to do it, is to do it."

A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. Donations in his name can be made to Forgotten Felines in Westbrook, Ct. In John's memory, please be kind and brighten someone's day.

My condolences to the family. I had the pleasure of dealing with John almost daily for 9 years at True Value. He was such a sweet guy, very focused and was truly a great carpenter. I looked forward to seeing him and will truly miss him.

I'm so sorry to hear of the passing of John he was such a amazing man I've known him for the past 25 yrs while I was working at true value I always loved when he would come in and talk. Last time I saw him I gave him a hug and told him to get better. I will definitely miss him a lot. I'm so sorry for your loss

John was a true, dedicated craftsman working with meticulous care. The outstanding carpentry he did for me went far above and beyond my best expectations! Our old Cape Cod was not level and square in some areas, yet to my amazement John made perfect mitered joints in all baseboards and trim, hanging doors with precision and so much more! I think of John every time I go upstairs, grasp the beautiful handrailing he installed and admire the legacy of workmanship so lovingly executed. His gentle nature and friendly personality made it a pleasure to have him present in our home. If John had one fault, it would be that he didn't charge nearly enough to compensate for value of his efforts. I felt compelled to offer a premium over the very modest amount he asked for.

I have some of the best memories growing up with John and his family. Niki and I would ride our bikes to his wood shop in Mystic and hang out so many times. John was always very kind! I´m so sorry to John´s family and to Deb. You are all in my prayers.

John Stedman changed our lives; he housed us. He helped us transform our time at 17 Washington Street in Mystic into a 3 generational home with his beautiful carpentry.
