I had a couple of jobs around Joe on the first of the 88's at E.B.. maybe the 90,92 or 94 boat....i think in the AMR ....he was ship sup...and, with the ship sup....it was their boat.
Joe was a strong inspiration to get the job done....watching the old timers pass is sad.
My respect and condolences for his family.

Condolences to the Birkle family. I worked with Joe for 20 years in submarine engine rooms starting with SSN690 Philadelphia. He was the ship's superintendent. Chief Birkle was the total submariner and all Navy. I was a young Electric Boat employee and he was one of the few who had the knowledge that would instill in me what was required for the job at hand along with my loyalty to the "Silent Service" for the next 43 years. I have not seen him since he retired but I did get to shake his hand when he left Electric Boat. Another submariner on "Eternal Patrol". "Fair Winds and Following Seas". RIP Chief Joseph Birkle USN.
