He was born in 1921 in Holyoke, son of the late Joseph E. and Leah (Debien) Butterfield and was a 1939 graduate of Holyoke High School. Joseph attended Billard Academy in New London and Tufts University in Boston, and was a merchant marine prior to World War II. During the war, Joe served in the submarine service with the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Massachusetts Submarine Veterans Assn. He had been employed at U.S. Envelope Co., Paper Box Co., and later was the thirty year owner of Butterfield Paper Co., retiring in 1985.
He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Claire (Jarisch) Butterfield; his three children, Dr. Joseph H. Butterfield M.D. and his wife Linda Butterfield M.D. of Minnesota, Richard J. Butterfield and his wife Rachel of Coventry, and Nancy Dornenburg and her husband Jeffrey of Simsbury; five grandsons, Joseph S., Michael C. and Brian P. Butterfield, and Nicholas and Tyler Dornenburg; and a sister, Anne Fitzpatrick and her husband James of Chicopee.
The funeral will be held Wednesday morning at 9 from the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton St., followed by a Mass in Holy Cross Church at 10. Burial will be in Forestdale Cemetery. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
